I was able play a DVD+R backup of Automodellista on my Magic V7 modded PS2.

Just insert the disc in and double click on the reset button. A single click will result in the orange screen prompting for a PS2 disc.

Also - you do not need to specifically get the Pioneer A104. A similar DVD-R is the Centedyne DVD-R/RW. It is exactly the same as the Pioneer A104.

How and where did you find out they are the same?

    LOL T'wasn't because of the v7 Magic2 chip. You were able to use a DVD+R because you have a V5, V6, or V7 PS2. Earlier V1 through V4 models had a different laser which can't handle DVD+R.

You can also find the OEM version of the Pioneer DVR-A04 retail unit at various resellers at www.pricewatch.com if you do a search for DVR-104 (and I'll bet it's even cheaper than the Centedyne...)

The Cendyne DVD-R when installed registers as the Pioneer DVR-104. Cendyne website also sells the Pioneer DVR-104 as a seperate product.

Also don't get the DVR-104 bundle that has all of the software - it is not worth it. Get the barebone and DL PrimoDVD from P2P.

As for the DVD+R deal ... well the capability to play the DVD+R was not listed under the "HOW TO USE MAGIC 2 INSTRUCTIONS".

I am just throwing the info out there for people who might have a DVD+RW burner. Instead of getting a DVD-RW for PS2 games you can just burn them on a DVD+RW burner if you already have one.

In my case I got a friend with a USB DVD+RW burner. He gave it to me. If I had not played around with my PS2 I would have just went out to get a DVD-RW burner so that I coudl burn PS2 games.

Well there was no need. I thought it was no hope for the DVD+R copy of Automodellista because the method for loading DVD-R did not work.

So Im not those type of people who are out to get recognition for information. I dont get a high off of being the first to say stuff.

I am just looking out for people like me.

As for the Cendyne DVD-RW it will be much cheaper thatn the Pioneer DVD-RW in a few months. Cendyne is not "brand-name" as Pioneer.

Get it from MicroCenter - you can burn for 30 days - then return that SOMMABITCS

Balto, would you still recommend using DVD-R over DVD+R for PS2 backups if you have a v5-7 unit (I have a v5)? Is there a difference, either short or long term? E.g., could using DVD+R burn the laser out faster than using DVD-R, etc. I will almost surely get an A04 DVD-R drive myself, but I am curious nonetheless.

In all honesty, that may be a question better put to Charlie, as he's done some research on the reflectivity of DVD-R media and the way the PS2 laser reacts to it.

The vast majority of us have DVD-R burners and many of us have older v1-v4 PS2s, so DVD+R was never an option for us. Unless Charlie has tested DVD+R vs DVD-R, I really don't know what to say about any long term effects...

(I do know that DVD-R media is a heck of a lot more reasonable in cost... )
