Magic V7 plays DVD+R Backups
I was able play a DVD+R backup of Automodellista on my Magic V7 modded PS2.
Just insert the disc in and double click on the reset button. A single click will result in the orange screen prompting for a PS2 disc.
Also - you do not need to specifically get the Pioneer A104. A similar DVD-R is the Centedyne DVD-R/RW. It is exactly the same as the Pioneer A104.

How and where did you find out they are the same?

LOL T'wasn't because of the v7 Magic2 chip. You were able to use a DVD+R because you have a V5, V6, or V7 PS2. Earlier V1 through V4 models had a different laser which can't handle DVD+R.
You can also find the OEM version of the Pioneer DVR-A04 retail unit at various resellers at www.pricewatch.com if you do a search for DVR-104 (and I'll bet it's even cheaper than the Centedyne...)

Balto, would you still recommend using DVD-R over DVD+R for PS2 backups if you have a v5-7 unit (I have a v5)? Is there a difference, either short or long term? E.g., could using DVD+R burn the laser out faster than using DVD-R, etc. I will almost surely get an A04 DVD-R drive myself, but I am curious nonetheless.

In all honesty, that may be a question better put to Charlie, as he's done some research on the reflectivity of DVD-R media and the way the PS2 laser reacts to it.
The vast majority of us have DVD-R burners and many of us have older v1-v4 PS2s, so DVD+R was never an option for us. Unless Charlie has tested DVD+R vs DVD-R, I really don't know what to say about any long term effects...
(I do know that DVD-R media is a heck of a lot more reasonable in cost... :))
