If this was your first attempt at it, then we need a little more information.
What OS are you running?
What burner are you using?
Do you have the latest firmware revision in it?
Have you applied the latest Px Engine update for PrimoDVD to your copy?
Is the burner the Master on the Secondary IDE controller?
Does your controller support PIO Mode 4 or DMA MultiMode 2?
Are you using an 80-pin ATA-100 cable instead of an ATA-33/66 cable?
Are your ASPI layer drivers at version 4.60 or better?
Have you tried creating a Global Image to hard drive first and then burning that image at 2x?
Are you trying to do a DVD-ROM to DVD-R burner copy?
If drive-to-drive copy, how are the drives set and cabled (Master/Slave on what controller, Primary/Secondary)?
As you can see, there can be a lot of variables that could contribute to the problem you're experiencing and more information is needed to better evaluate where to tell you to start looking...

Running Windows 2000.
I am using the Pioneer DVR-104.
Yes I just updtaed to the latest drivers for the 104.
I just re-intalled the Px engine update..not sure how recent it is.
My burner is set to master and the dvd player slave.
Not sure if my controller supports PIO Mode 4 or DMA Multimode 2.
Which is better to use the 80-pin ATA-100 cable or the ATA-33/66 cable?
Yes I just updated to the 4.71 ASPI drivers.
No, I haven't tried creating a GLobal Image to hard drive first..not sure how.
I've tried doing dvd-rom to dvd-r burner.
The dvd-r is master on ide1 and the dvd-rom is slave on ide1.
That's what i have so far...

Everything sounds kosher, with the exception of the drive cable. I originally tried an 80-pin ATA-100 cable on my A03 and Yamaha 40x CD-R/RW burner and they went nutz. I switched to a standard plain 40-pin ATA-33/66 cable and things were cool.
So, I'd really suggest changing the cable on your secondary chain.
Then try to create a global image to your hard drive and burn it back to your 104. That will tell you if the 104 is functioning correctly.
As for creating a GI, here's an except for a guide I wrote for the PS2 dvdiso news group.

Open Primo. At the top you'll see the main Menu bar which consists of:
File Edit Drive View Tools Window Help
Insert your PS2 DVD into your DVD drive (DVD-R burner or DVD-ROM drive), wait for the drive light to stop blinking and then choose "Drive" from the menu bar. Then from the menu drop-down, choose "Build Global Image".
A new window opens entitled "Drive Explorer and Drive Properties" along with your drive's system letter (mine's E: ). NOTE: This is a good place to check the firmware revision of your drive too. A great site for the latest firmware updates for just above every drive under the sun is: http://www.firmware.fr.st/
Now, you'll notice that the information for PS2 disc you put in your drive is automatically displayed in this new window. Down below the information grid you'll see a box on the left called "Global Image". Just click on the [...] icon to browse to where you want to save the image file(s) on your hard drive and give it a name. With that out of the way, set the "Reading Speed" to MIN to ensure a good read of all the audio and video files (although my A03 ends up reading at 18-24x anyway.) Then click on the "Build" icon right next to it and off you go. Hey, that was easy, eh?
== Burning a Global Image in Primo DVD ==
This operation is a little different than the creation procedure. Again open PrimoDVD. At the main screen, right below the main menu bar, you'll see a series of drive-like icons. Hover your cursor over the icons to display their function. You want to click the 3rd icon from the left: "Global Image or Other Image". Note that when you do, the right-hand frame changes. This is where we enter in the GI information prior to the burn.
Note that in the left frame, your drive(s) will be displayed, either as large icons or as Host ID: (selectable from the main menu bar under VIEW) and that the right frame says "No Recorder selected" above the number of Copies box if you have more than one drive in your system. If so, you need to tell Primo which drive to use. To do this, double click on your burner in the left frame. You should then see a red, left-facing arrow next to the drive and "1 Recorder(s)" above the number of Copies box.
To the right on the same line as the "Copies" box, choose your burning speed. I use 2x for the best results with my A03 on good certified DVD-R media (more about that in a moment.) To the right of that, select either "Record and Verify" or "Record" from the drop down box. I personally use "Record and Verify" which does double the amount of time because Primo will go back after completing the burn and compare the DVD-R with the HD image to insure I didn't have a bad blank disc. I also leave "Verify every round" set as is.
Below that line is the "Disc Image File" box. Again, just click on the [...] icon at the far right to browse to where your GI is and just select the small {game}.gi file. Once that's done, click the Red dot (Go!) to start the burn and go grab a drink or a bite to eat. <g>

The itty-bitty lord.gi file. It acts similar to a Cue sheet and tell Primo or RecordNow that it's dealing with a split GI and how many parts it has.
THe Px Engine update does this so that even Win95 folks can create and save a GI to HD.
Win95 = FAT16 , 2GB file size limitation
Win98/ME = FAT32 , 4GB file size limitation
WinNT, 2K, XP = NTFS , no file size limitation (that you really need to worry about, yet... <g>)
Now just burn that puppy off at 2x on one of your TDKs and you should be golden...

Tell me, did you change that drive cable? If so, have you tried pulling the DVD-ROM drive off the chain (so the 104 is the only device left on it as master)?
The only other thing I can think of is your IDE controller itself or the Microsoft IDE drivers that Win2K is using. I don't use Win2K, but double check your harware config in Control Panel | System and then how ever 2K leads you to viewing the IDE hardware. Check each channel's settings.
Otherwise, if at all possible, see if you can pull the 104 out of your machine and try it in another box to verify it's actually not a problem with the 104. If it works in another machine, Win98, WinXP, whatever.
If you were able to image the original disc, then the 104 is working with Primo from the read-side aspect. It's the burn-side that appears to be the problem, which is why I suggest verifying that in another machine.
If you can get a disc to burn in another machine, then we've begun to narrow things down to a hardware/software config problem back on your Win2K box. If it won't burn there either, time for a warranty repair/replacement of the 104...

I am using a 40-pin ATA 33/66 cable and I have tired swapping it for a 80-pin ATA 100 cable same result.
I have tried using a windows 98 based system as well as my normal win 2000 based one. I also disconnected all other media drives except for the Pioneer DVD-R 104. I have so far been able to create a Global Image by having the burner read the game itself and it is also able to burn cd-r's....but...
when i try to test and if ok record at 2x..the burner gets through the testing without a problem but when it comes to the recording...it spits out the media and gives me the error:
Image Job Untitled Terminated with errors.
Error -10 at Sector 816 - Disc Read Error - Command 2A Sense: 03 ASC: 73 ASC: 03
Looking up the error code it says: power calibration area error
Any ideas....
I have already updated the firmware and the px engine.

Honestly...? At this point I truly believe you have a drive with a defective burning circuit. It happens from time to time.
Call the place you bought it from, explain the troubleshooting you've done (so they don't try to bullshit you), and demand a cross-shipped exchange replacement (and let them deal with Pioneer to get it repaired...
