It is very easy to understand if you just open your eyes. Read what RAISTLIN was saying and that's exactly the reason.

DVD rips itself is not bad, it is all in the game design. In more traditonal games, data are load into memory and run from the memory. So what's 10 minutes of load time compare to hours of game play. That way you don't notice the difference in laser use. Music was ususally generated on the fly but gets repeative as the level grow. So the game developer change the way the game data is loaded, especially music. Data are stream from the media (CD or DVD) on the fly. so if you play the game for two hours the laser continue to read the disk for two hours.
Now look at the difference in CD and DVD. DVD are more compact so the same data will take up about 8~9 times the area on CD. and since the data is expected by the game at a certain rate, the laser have to read 8 times more area than when it read from a DVD and hopfully to in the same amount of time. (CD have to spin at leat 8 times faster if the data is time senstive otherwise you will get skip).
How about rips that get rid of music? well the game itself does not konw that so it will keep come back to the same area to read the dummy file. which is also bad for the motor (continues motion vs continues adjustment).
So what's that all mean. Say a expect design live for a laser is 5~10 year by Sony. (Electrics will break, that's a fact. How long before it die is depended on its quality. and quality translate to price so don't expect Sony to put a laser with expected life that are more than 10 years. It does not make sense). If that's to be the average life of a laser under normal use (so some will die faster while others may die slower). By play a laser intensive game, you have just shorten the laser life by about 8 times. The laser expect life will now be round 1~2 year.
How about DVD-R. say the reflective is less. so if the laser have to output 20% more power to read the media, it only shorten the life by a small percent.
So any game that stream data while game play will be bad DVDrips.
