Remember a DVD is a much more dense medium and streams data up to 9 times the speed of a CD. What does this mean in plain english? A CDRIP is gonna make your drive work like hell to keep the data stream going, whereas a DVD-R backup will only make it work a little bit harder because of the reduced reflectivity. In the long run, a DVD-Burner is the best bet. You also have the added benefit of being able to backup DVD movies with all the extras instead of re-encoding just the movie to DivX or multiple SVCD's as well.
If it ain't broke don't try to fix it! But, hell if you can tweak that bastard just a little bit more....hehehe.
