I use Ritek G04(DVD-R 4X) and I've never had a problem with them. My LG drive support's 8X. Does anyone actually burn at 8X? When I'm burning I just put it on max. I know I shouldn't, but I never had a problem yet.

My drive is also compatible with dual-layered disks. Is it worth picking up a few DL DVD for a few games?

I also noticed my games take a beating because of my case I have them in. It's a DVD case that holds 60 DVD's. They're only minor scratches from taking them out and sliding them back in the case.

I would like to keep them in decent condition, even though they're cheap backups. I would rather save the trouble of re-burning and re-labelling them again. Any suggestions?

    Thanks

Overspeeding the G04 is not that good idea, as the disk remains readable though, but the error numbers may go up to high rates. (and quality will be lower and it may be your problem later) I doubt that LG is supported by any DVD quality checking program (maybe just Nero, but I am not sure) but if you have a Benq, Plextor, LiteOn reader/writer you can test the quality on both 4x and 8x media. I am sure there will be noticable difference.

Dual layer disks cost a lot, at the moment I do not think it is worth to play with them. Also their quality (except the MKM aka Verbatim/Philips) is quite low. Only a few games are based on DVD9, those are ripped to DVD-R single layer by talented guys, so I use those rather.

I also use those cases, it is the most reliable storage format if you have MANY disks. I use those that holds 240-320 each, and most disks are in excellent quality, except those that were low quality ones. Well, though I think backing up some from time to time is still necessary, maybe those new scratch-proof dyes will solve this, but I personally doubt it and if those help it is quite late to annouce knowing how many disks are around.

    regards, Stephen

Are you sure your drive supports Dual Layer burning?

Well, I had a peek in my LG book and I didn't see anything other then the DVD ROM can read single/dual-layered disks.

It supports DVD-RAM? What's it good for?

    Thanks

not much. It's a seldom used and supported format.

DVD-RAM is a rare format, used by LG/Panasonic. It is said to be the safest optical storage BUT you have to pay its price as it is a slow media (I mean reading/writting takes ages, hehe) and also the media price is far from that I could accept. So I still prefer DVD+-R and no matter if the media dies, I do a backup from time to time, it still costs less than a RAM. And no, your model does not support writting of Dual layer disk.
