But it's time to quit searching for answers, and officially ask a question

I ripped and burned my first back up disc today but I can't get it to load using ESR, and I've burned multiple copies.

    Game: Guitar Hero World Tour
    Version: 4
    Media: TDK DVD+R 16x
    Write speed: 2.4x

I'm also using ESR 9b and the disc patcher v0.24a.

From what I'm reading it seems the most likely problem is an old laser, but, I'd like a second opinion if possible. Thanks all!

Try DVD-R (minus) media (Sony or Verbatim seem to be good and compatible) and if your owning a decent DVD-Burner (16x and up) burn it with 8x or 12x because the slow 2.4x speed seems to make problems (less quality) on modern drives.
    Slim PS2 SCPH-70004 (v13) w/ FMCB, 3x Sony 8MB, 1x MaxMemory 16MB (Backup card)

I'm not available for FMCB installation service until I can guarantee a processing time of a few days again, sorry.

What version ps2 are you useing? That can make a big difference, for dvd-r's and rw's weren't specifically set to work until the version 9 and above ps2's. Also try burning your discs at 4x, that seems to work best for most people. I used TKD discs for all my backups because I got them at a really cheap discount price where I used to work, but get verbatims if you can, and even better taiyo yudens (I think that's what they're called) You can usually find them online. And if you don't know this already, stick with the +r's, don't go with the -r's, they seem to be less compatible.

I have a console (V5) that just refuses to play all X16 blank media(all other ps2's I have had play 16x fine). If I burn onto X8 media on this v5 console it plays perfectly. I'm not sure if this is your problem but it would be worth looking at.
I use DVD-r . The +R's give me trouble. But I think this depends on many variables.
So once you find the combination that suits your machine , stick with it.

thanks for the tips. All I have are these +r's at the moment, so I'll try everything I can with the variables and if its a no go I'll pick up a small pack of them from the store tomorrow. Also a question for you guys, how fast is the esr patch supposed to be? When I hit the patch button and open the Guitar Hero file its almost instantaneously finished with the patch. Is that supposed to happen?

Also, my PS2 is version 4...and I bought it second hand about 2 months ago, but from what I've learned it is getting fairly old.

Yeah patch only takes a split second. V4 is quite old but should still be fine. Does it play original games OK ? What about movies ?

Glad im not doing anything wrong on the patch!

And yes, other than a fairly loud hum when reading CD games, the player works great-reading DVD games and movies no problem.

That's good.Laser is fine then. So I would think your problem is disc type.
Have you tried a different game to backup other than guitar hero ?
Try and buy a DVD-r x8 blank and give that a try also.

I havnt tried any other games yet. The only other game we have is Tetris Worlds, which is a CD game, and I'm not quite sure the process on making a backup of that one yet.
I'm burning another of GH3 right now and we'll see how it goes. Thanks again for the help!

I have used a lot of TDK+R in the past for PS2 with ESR, always setting booktype to DVD-ROM and burning at 8x, they all work fine. The media I used was always TDK 003 MID. If The only other game you have is CD based you cannot use that directly with ESR unless you convert it to DVD first.

Try (as suggested) burning at a higher speed, if you can set your burner to booktype as DVD-ROM aswell, can't hurt.
