I dont know how the HI-Val is, but if you go to pricewatch.com the pioneer 106 can be bought for $129 including shipping. No rebates.

In my experience with Hi-Val in the past (CD/CDRW's) they have actually been rebadged brand names (in other words, refurb's). I would only do this if you are really strapped for cash. Just be prepared that you may have to replace it within the next year. The longest I've seen a High-Val burner go is roughly 14 months under regular use. For comparison, I've had a factory refurbished Pioneer A04 for over 2 years now--and I use it constantly for PS2, Movie, and PC backups-- I've even started using it to archive data from work. Pioneers are solid--especially for the price.

If it ain't broke don't try to fix it! But, hell if you can tweak that bastard just a little bit more....hehehe.
