help... ps2 won't load backup dvds –
08-25-2003,04:50 PM
I have tried backing up the getaway and midnight club II with almost every dvd burning program available, and none will load in the ps2... I have a v4 with a magic 3 chip. The programs I have tried using are:
discjuggler
nero
alcohol 120%
recordnow max
dvd decrypter
gear professional
NOTHING WORKS... please, any help would be appreciated.

It's possible that your laser is starting to go (it's a V4 after all).

I've got a v.4 with a messiah 2, and your problem is either the laser or the dvd-r media you're using. First, burn a game to a quality dvd-r (TDK I used, you could also use verbatim or ritek G04). Then, if that still doesn't work [very well], then another thing you can do is open the PS2 up, undo the 4 screws on the dvd drive, turn on the power, eject the drive, turn off the power, and then take off the dvd drives case. Now, look for a white cog that's in clear view, and turn it clockwise a click or 5 (but FIRST mark where it was originally set - with a permanent marker or something, in case something goes wrong). This basically makes the laser closer to the disk when reading it, improving the recognition. Once you have done this, screw it all back together and test the dvd-r. If it still doesnt read, open up the PS2 again and turn the cog a few more clicks clockwise. Keep doing this until it reads. If it doesnt, there is more drastic action you can take, but it's more risky. I over-adjusted mine, and it didnt read as well, so fiddle with it to get the best readability. It's what worked for me, and doesnt involve too much risk of damage to yor PS2.

I think you meant 5 degrees and not 5 clicks.

I have two other dvd backups that work fine... I didn't burn them though. I might not even be burning them right. Can I just create an image file and burn it from there; or is there more to it than that?

No, I meant clicks (or notches). Then you can measure how much you have adjusted it. How do you measure degrees with getting out extra equipment? Anyway, to make a dvd backup with Recordnow Max 4.5 (which I have used many times to make my successfully-loading backups), go to "drive", "disk explorer" and make a "global image" reading at 'min' speed. When that has finished, go to "file", "new job", "global image or other image", then when the screen for that comes up, "add file", choose your image, and burn the image to dvd-r, at 1x and possibly "test, record and verify", or just "record". Again, it worked for me.

Thanks Titanium Apple!
I had the same problem too and I searched the forum 'till I got to this thread. I tried to adjust like you said: turning the wheel clockwise; first 5 clicks, after that I turned the wheel a few more clicks clockwise untill I reached the 22 clicks and in that position I couldn't even read normal DVD's anymore. So i turned the wheel back 22 clicks and tried it the other way (moving the lens away from the disc). I turned the weel 5 clicks anti-clockwise to the left and it read my Verbatim DVD-R perfectly. So thanks for the tip
Oh and it only works on my Verbatim DVD-R's, it still doesn't work with Nashua DVD-R's

It's probably still only reading Verbatims because they're very good quality, while the other brand I haven't heard of, so they can't be as good. I've got PS2 backups on cheaper media too and they won't load either, also don't try cheap media at all as they will wear out the laser a lot quicker. It also depends on the quality of the laser, and usually how new is it too (i.e. a V.7's laser will be much better than a V.4's).
