HDD file transfer using hdl_dump server

Hope someone can help me understanding this... Here is what I am trying to do, I have 2 fat PS2 and on one I have backed up my games to 80GB HDD and HDLoader .8c install (on the PS2 itself). I just got another network adapter and 160GB HD that I would like to use on my other PS2 that does not read all the discs that well. I was thinking it would be possible to copy the games from already running PS2 using hdl_dump server and hdl_dump gui v14.

I am doing this over the network, (directly through a hub), and hdl_dump server on the PS2 initializes correctly, on my laptop I can ping PS2 and I can refresh PS2 info and see the list of all my games. Then I put the new 160GB drive using USB enclosure and hdl_dump gui detects it and formats it to PS2 file system. Now I put backup jobs in a queue and they show in hdl_dump gui job queue. When I start the job, nothing happens and the program needs to be closed.

I tried to put two .iso files from my laptop drive to hdl_dump server and that worked. For some reason the other way does not work.

Can someone explain me how to move my iso images from 80GB to 160GB either using XP and this program, ftp, partitrion magic, clone, or anything else?

One more thing, I would like to use 160GB to move movies to it so they can be played with SMS. I was hoping to use FTP for that, but of the HDLoader has game images on, how can both co-exist?

Well, i dont use network transfer as its just too slow for me, but you might try a different HDL Dump app, such as the GUI versions.

Such as :
LordBoGaMi HDLD GUI
HDL Dump - GUI - v8b

Be sure your using the same hdl_srvr.elf version as the PC client version of HDL Dump.exe with the GUI app.

If you want a quicker method , you might want to use Winhiip and connect both those HDDs to your PC. Winhiip has a option to copy HDD to HDD and the transfer rate is by far the quickest you will ever find.....about 10x faster than network transfers. ;)

Winhiip sounds like preferred method then, but I only have one USB enclosure, how can I move files from PS2 to it with Winhiip, does it have some sort of PS2 transfer?

How about SMS files, do I need a separate partition for that and do I set that up ahead of time?

You can place one HDD directly connected on a IDE ribbon inside the PC and the other connected via the PC's USB port with your USB Enclosure.
You also connect both HDDs inside if you have the 'double' connection IDE ribbons and use one from the Secondary IDE and one from the Primary IDE...{just make sure its not your PC's HDD you use or you wont have any OS to use}

All kinds of normal files (movies, music, programs, whatever) can be stored in normal file partitions of the PS2 HDD.

Those partitions have nothing in common with the installed HDL games, which are stored as a separate partition for each game. So every installed HDL game is not a normal file at all, but an entirely separate partition. Thus it is quite normal for a PS2 HDD (unlike a PC HDD) to have a very large number of partitions (the max number of HDL games is 256 I think).

Non-HDL user partitions suitable for storage of normal files can be created and managed by the HddManager subprogram of uLaunchELF (aka: uLE), and it is the FileBrowser subprogram of uLE that is normally used to transfer normal files between all PS2 compatible media, including the non-HDL HDD partitions. Those media also include a networked PC via the "host:" device driver for the PS2 LAN connector, which is my own favourite method of moving files to PS2-specific storage. (This requires running a suitable client program on the PC of course.)

There are 2, PSFExplorer and PS2 Shell.

PSFExplorer is a beta app and was never completed. It is capable of transfering similar to Winhiip, for other than PS2 game transfers, but is very unstable and is known to cause corruption to partitions and whole HDDs. It has also been reported to work fine for some , without any such problems. Use this at your own risk....

PS2 Shell is a better app, but is not very noob friendly. It requires some DOS command knowledge and there is very little info on using it.

Ive attached both if you wish to check them out. But you might find using uLaunchELF's Host feature along with PS2Client a bit more 'user friendly', as this is the best file managing app available for the PS2. You can find the latest version in its official release thread, info on useage and get help if you need it.
