GT4 to DVD-5 using toolboys patch

Hi, first of all i hope its ok to open a new thread, if not, just move it, im sorry.

Im following threads since the whole gt4-discussions started and i had some tries by myself that wont worked (ripping without removing any checks, crossing original with demo-files etc.).

Now toolboys patches came up and i gave myself another try. i did everything like he told in his guide except that i ripped files from gt4.vol before i made the iso. I used extractor/builder from the bmw-demo-ripkit (of course made for gt3). Went to directory extracted\mpeg\gt4 and changed every file that was about 300 MB to the dummy from the ripkit with same filename. Rebuilding gt4.vol and the iso and burning worked fine with no errors.

In the PS2 the iso booted, showed a copyright screen, made a flickering to black screen and stops...

Are there still some more checks that toolboy didnt found out? or do i still have to change a dvd-check? From my first days with ps2 i still know that dvd5-rips had always some files to be changed to work as cdrom, maybe has the same thing to be done to make a dvd9 to dvd5 ?

im very sure that the extractor/builder works....

anyone did like me? suggestions please!

if u want to make a working dvd5 rip u have to patch all those 3 files (core, slus, ioprp) with hdd versions of the patches not the dvd9 'cause the dvd9 patches made to load the vol file back from layer1 (and u have it on layer0). hope it helps.

perhaps I have expressed myself wrongly, because i USED the hdd-patches. I did everything exactly as toolboy said, including the hexeditor stuff, and there were no signs of a fail. I guess the point is really the extractor/builder, cause the mpeg files had no .pss ending, they were all just numbers. but on the other hand a lot of the files have .endings and seem to be correct. Dont have a clue anymore... maybe toolboy or anyone else will be releasing a ripkit soon

i have read somewhere here and the other threads that the GT3 vol extractor extracts the wrong files, therefore not compatible. if it were, there would've been a DVD5 scene release but so far theres only an HDD release. so i'm thinking that a new or updated vol extractor is the next step.

if you want to backup ur HDD iso, use winrar to rar up the iso and use 2 DVD5's!

darklocust you could back it up to a DVD with 55MB zipped files, and then have a 700MB CD with the rest of the data on it. I think that would work. I will test and get back to everyone, as CDs are about 4x cheaper than DVDs, and you will only need to use around 700MB of a 4700MB DVD.

/* edit - Just checked it out. After about 2.5 hours of crunching, it zipped and fits perfectly on a DVD5. 4,591,826,430 bytes :) No DVD9 or dual DVDs needed, unless you can't leave it crunch overnight to backup. It will extract faster

GT4.VOL is 2.87gb and GT4L1.VOL is 2.15gb (sizes from PAL version)
Yet using GT3VOL to look at their files, they both appear to contain exactly the same data.
This gives rise to 2 questions:

1) What exactly is the difference between these files?
If they contain the same data then why is GT4.VOL more than half a gig bigger? I haven't yet finished comparing them so maybe I will find files in GT4 that aren't in GT4L1, but if someone already knows what the difference is please point it out to save me the time.

2) If they contain the same data, then GT4L1 is redundant and only there for copy protection. So does this mean a DVD5 rip should be easy? All you would have to do is redirect any references to files contained in GT4L1 to the same files in GT4. If you could find them all.

Otherwise - if we get a program that can properly extract the videos from these VOL files, it should be possible to replace them with dummies, or preferably downsample the videos to save space.

Personally I think it looks promising at the moment, although I can only theorise, it's completey beyond me to actually do any of the required programming!

imo most of the GT4L1.VOL contains movies that can be downsampled but the problem is that GT4L1.VOL contains right in front of it the index adress for every file inside so a relinker is needed to corect that table. A scene release will not appear imo 'cause the groups are lazy in this perriod so a tool for this king of vol is needed. the vol extractor for gt3 is not working so if u have another one (the only one i didn't check is that bmw-demo-ripkit ) i will try it that too. the program that extracts the movies from GT4L1.VOL made by ps2ownz is working for NTSC not for PAL.

something else i found out... i am not sure if the lba adress for the movies are inside of GT4L1.VOL but i found out that right after each movie there is around 200-300 bytes that are not from the movies.
PAL has 58 movies 56 without sound and the other two are intro (3min) and outro (6min) with sound
