I am interested in setting up one of the computers at my University as a possible FTP source for GI's.

    GI = Global Images

I guess I could circulate the GI's weekly. But since I'm limited to the hard drive capacity it will probably be like 1 - 2 games at most.

So the only problem is that I dont know how to set it up as an FTP.

I can get the IP or I could set it up as a PC Anywhere Remote. Just need some guidance as to the best way to go about it.

Seriously -- don't do it. I wouldn't risk your education over trying to be generous enough to share a few game images. If the university discovers you're running an FTP server with that kind of material, you'll get whacked for sure as soon as the IT department notices the increase in traffic.

Just learn to post to the news groups, in particular, alt.binaries.cd.image.playstation2.dvdiso where GIs and ISOs can be found. If you need help getting started, PM me.

Trust the old dog on this one, eh?

    Cool Cool.

Of course there are places in my university that I can get access to and establish a server without anyone knowing what I did.

But yeah I hold off on that.

Dude i seriously doubt that, IT Techies can pick it up....they will notice there bandwith triple in usage and will suspect something.

BUT if you are serious and you REALLY can get around them (ie if there total dipshits ) i suggest setting up a FTP (as PC Anywhere is too risky)

If you DO go ahead with it and need some help setting up a FTP, drop me a line, i can help ya out

    badexecute@hotmail.com

P.S if you are going ahead with it, i suggest you find out if you uni is on a static or dynamic IP, as this will make a lot of difference

It is a university - so bandwidth from any port would be high. The IP is static.

Don't do it. If your campus IT guys have a pair of firing brain cells to rub together, they'll catch on. The best case scenario is if they can't pin it on you - it'll get shut down, but you won't get busted.

    That's the best case scenario.

Worst case scenario, some cranky sysadmin will decide to make an example of you. Get you booted out of school, maybe sic the feds on you if he's feeling really nasty.

Trust me. I'm a campus IT guy.

Take Balto's advice, get into usenet.

And if you're looking for the real basics of finding out what usenet news is, try:

    http://www.benzieshoreslibrary.org/fiug/usenet.html

Most of the links are woefully out of date, but the gist is there. Or try a google search against "usenet" and "basics". Lurk before you post. A lot of the groups have individual FAQ's that may offer relevant tips as well.

If you're looking for a client to use, PowerPost is good for posting en masse, and NewsBin is good for leeching. If you're looking to actually, ya know, read articles, I prefer Agent... But then again, I've been using it basically since it first came out, so there may be something better there as well. All of these are Windows clients - if you're on a Mac or linux, you'll need to explore other options.

(If you're a really hardcore masochist, try trn or nn under unix - an exercise in futility these days due to the number of posts/pieces, but oh, back in the day...)

Although billed as the alt.binaries.warez.ibm-pc (ABWI) FAQ at: http://www.warezfaq.org/first.htm#Welcome or www.warezfaq.org it's still a good overall primer (which I had a paw in helping to write. See the Contributors page) that applies to binary news groups in general.

It's html based and answers around 80% of the questions a n00bie will have and good examples of everything from setting up Agent, uploading and downloading, lurking and group etiquette, acronyms, and to why you need to be very careful when posting (header content), etc. is there.

It's just a little project a bunch of us "old-timers" decided to put together because text-based FAQs just generally suck and kids these days rarely take the time to read through all that crap anyway...

The links are fairly well maintained and it's still fairly relevant material and a good place for anyone trying to get started.

Hope you find it useful if you decide to give it a look...
