Firmware question
Hi there, i just purchased the pioneer 106 /oem with v1.8 firmware (thx for the advances by bumholio and uns97)
my question is , what is the advantage to upgrade the region-free firmware?(mostly i use my dvd-r to copy ps2 games only, so woundering..)
thank you~

Well, you can watch out-of-region dvds with the region free firmware. I don't recommend to use your writer to watch dvd movies, it's for writing. As I can remember this (hacked) firmware lets you write any disk at 2x and enables ripping the dvd video disks at 12x. If you use quality disks, then the 2x writting for all disks is not neccessary, as quality media can be written at 2x or 4x with the official fw aswell. Ripping DVD movies at high speed may be a factor to think about, but I prefer a DVD ROM reader. So this all deppends on the usage, the only plus I think is the 2x writting on any disk, but with low quality disks you may have reading problems, and this will cause harm to the PS2 aswell...

i reccomend upgrading the firmware only for the 2x4all capabilities...theres no real downside because if you burn a 1x at 2x and it doesnt work, just set it to burn at 1x....ritek g03 will only burn at 1x in my pioneer 105 with pioneer firmware, but with hacked firmware I have no problems what so ever at 2x.... So you can always just test and see how fast they are reliable to.....i kinda wanna get the 107 since they have an 8x4all dvd-r patch for it and i beleive most good quality 4x media will do fine at 8x
