I know that the main problem of this thread has been solved already, a new backup being made that does work, but I still wanted to add my own comment to the following statement.

    Here I have to disagree.

What you say would be perfectly true if the same PS2 laser would need to be used in reading the ISO off the first (non-working on the PS2) backup, before burning it to the new disc. Such an attempt would probably be doomed to failure.

But normally you will never use a PS2 to make such ISOs but will instead use a DVD reader/burner on a PC. And this ensures that an entirely different, probably fresher, DVD laser will be used, and definitely one whose focus and alignment is fully independent of the one in the PS2. Thus it will quite often be possible to read a valid ISO back from a backup that the PS2 is completely unable to boot, as long as the data itself on that disc is valid, though it may be hard to read for the PS2 laser.

So it is always worth the effort of trying to recover the ISO from such a disc in a PC reader (assuming the original disc is lost), like the user successfully did in this particular case.

    Best regards: dlanor

The reason i said using a backup to create another backup isnt reliable, is becasue if that backup stopped working, then something caused it to stop working, either a scratch on the disc or the disc might have been exposed to a heat source, etc.

So i wouldnt consider any disc that is no longer working to be a reliable source and we should always encourage people to use the original when ever possible to ensure a better chance for it to work. Sure the PC might be able to read the disc just fine and extract , then re-burn it, but can we positively say it will be reliable to use it again in the PS2?

dlanor, thanks... I was thinking the same thing when I attempted to re-backup the disc

jnabk, I see what you mean but the disc in question was only a day old and used once, the disc surface was perfect.

That may be the case, but the problem could be to small for the eye to see.

I had the same issue (sort of) with a copy of guitar hero I backed up. Though I think I found a strange quirk for my sony media... If I burn it then let it "cure" for a while before sticking it in the drive for like an hour or more I don't get as much trouble from the chemical in the disk. See I would burn a backup and stick it right in the ps2 and play it for like 2 hours (lol) and then pull it out and it would stop reading. I look at the disk and it looks like someone ran it through "The Gimp" and used the smudge tool on it on the edges of the written lines on the disc, causing the chemical to look as though it was bleeding outwards. That was with Sony 16x dvd-r's burned at 1x and 8x
