I am getting a PS2 for christmas and am assuming that I need a mod-chip to play copied DVD games. If this is correct then I need to buy a PS2, Mod-chip, and a DVD burner.
I will probably get the Sony DRU500A burner and the Messiah 2 mod-chip (if mod-chip is required).

So, is the mod-chip required for DVD copied games?

Yes you need a mod chip to play a copied dvd. messiah 2 is the way to go also.

get a pre-modded ps2 with a messiah 2, there are some people selling em in the b/s/t section, it'll save a lot of trouble with the install (if you cant solder, or dont know anyone who can)

I am going to try and do the soldiering myself, as I have some experience with it and like the challenge (I am cheap). Just not sure if the that new burner is worth the money? I assume it is and will probably go with the best.
