Dvd Rw

If a DVD burner has the medium DVD-RW on the box, does it mean that it is a given that it will also function with DVD-R?

I assume if it had DVD-R on the box, and no sign of DVD-RW, it wouldn't necessarily be the same, since one is superior then the other?

A dvd-rw burner will do both -rw and -r.
