4.7 is available in the non-cartridge format, but it is only supported in the newer drives--ie. more expensive ones.

The -r/+rw drives are often cheaper--at least the good ones--and offer more flexbility. DVD-RAM is really only good as a backup medium. Tape Drives are cheaper and just as fast for backup--though they are much slower for restoration.

For making movies and backing up PS2--DVD-R is the best way to go.
If it ain't broke don't try to fix it! But, hell if you can tweak that bastard just a little bit more....hehehe.

Hey guys, i would just like to add that, i own this Panasonic LDF-311.

And well its very nice for my needs, burns dvd-r's quite nicely for my PS2 and XboX, i just wish that it could burn cd-r's ;(
Also teh DVD-RAM discs are great and only cost me about 9.50 for 9 GiGS http://avlogic.com/product.cgi?code=11780803, which stream shitloads of MP3's str8 to my XboX

Also what really pissed me off is that,
PANASONIC HAS JUST CAME OUT WITH A NEW DRIVE THAT WRITES TO DVD-r/DVD-RAM/DVD-RW/CD-R/CD-RW!!!!
    http://avlogic.com/product.cgi?code=18030019
After ive only had mine for two months!

So yeah DVD-RAM is KiLLER! but you still have to format teh discs b4 you can use them ;( takes as long as burning.
(they say 'pre-formatted' but mine never are)
