i saw some dvd-ram recordable media on meritline.com and i was wondering what it is....

they're damn expensive, so it must be good

i've tried looking for info about it, but all i get are results about dvd-ram drives, and those sites dont explain what those are...

i bet they wouldnt work with ps2 games, who would pay that much for 1 recordable dvd-ram anyway...

any help on this? much appreciated.

It's like a big floppy or hard drive. VERY few dvd players will read them, and a few dvd-roms will read them. I think it was the first writable dvd format released, and should be the first one to die since I can't think of any use for it now-a-days since hard drives are so cheap..

The Panasonic LF-D311 is a DVD-R/DVD-RAM drive, is still available, and was very popular a mere 12 months ago...

Dvd ram has a burst rate of 58 mbps compared to dvd of 26 mbps , the track pitch is closer together, I guess coz they are formatted for drag and drop .

It looks like they are very good but not really compatible with the average ps2 dvd dude...

You can write 100.000 times to DVD-RAM!
    DVD-RW is only 1000 times!

True, the DVD-RAM discs are incompatible with the PS2, but the Panasonic can also burn DVD-Rs quite nicely, which do work...

Yeah, but I believe DVD-RAM only holds 2.6GB.

2.6 GB per side--single/double sided varieties. Some drives require the media to be in cartridges, some will take them loose. Drag/Drap capability just like a floppy, but that also limits the actual usable space on the disc because it is pre-formatted (physically) into sectors for this to work (a 12K file may actully use 16K or 32K of space, depending on what that sector size is). You have to have a player that supports DVD-RAM--most older ones do not, but they will support DVD-R and/or DVD+R.

Basically, you spend an @$$ of $$ for more aggravation and less versatility.

Stick with a DVD-R/CD-R drive--you'll get more use out of it for a much longer time.

No, DVD RAM hold 4.7 Gig. But DVD RAM disks also come in a special case that will not let you remove the disk, also DVD-RAM is not compatible with PS2 consoles.
