I've used a Pioneer and had a few probs with it, but it could have just been a defective one as well. Now I use a Plextor 16x and an NEC 3540 and they both work just fine although the Plextor does give perfect results every time.

You could also try Lite-On. NEC and Plextor are good also. I agree with mann75, stay away from I/O Magic. I would also say stay far far far away from Sony or any other big name burners. Sony's are terrbile, even though they have some Lite-On parts in there...

personally i own a nec burneer for over a year and compared to my old burner which was some name hi-val there is no comparisons. the nec has burned any kind of media i have put in it were as the previous burner i was using would burn coasters or skip alot while playing the burnt disc. nec burners are around $40-45 at newegg.com and you can check out http://www.cdfreaks.com/ and http://www.anandtech.com/ to help you decide as the offer lots of info on computer hardware such as dvd burner. good luck in what ever dvd burner you go with

Running two LG burners here a GSA-4040B, just over 2 years old, 3 coasters out of approximately 1000 dvd recordables using Maxell/Ritek/Taiyo Yuden & TDK media.

And a LG GSA-4167B, about 3 months old, working through my 4th 50 pack of Ritek G05 DVD-R's, no coasters thus far.

They're solid burners, can ussually read badly scratched and dirty discs, easy to get region free firmware for and very quiet. I couldn't recommend them high enough.
