DVD backup mishap

Hello there peeps,

Well, finally recieved my Sony Vaio laptop grx670 with a Toshiba DVD-RW SD R6012. Wow it was an expensive toy I was able to buy. After depriving myself from any toy for about 4 months. :-(

Anyways, I read and read the forums and found out that PrassiPrimo DVD 2.0 was the best software to use to make DVD backups. Well, ran out purchased some DVD-R media and tried making a back-up of my Pac-Man World 2. I followed the the PrassiPrimo DVD 2.0 Guide. Well, it completed the back-up and it said it was successful. Poped it into my PS2 and it seems like its going to read it then I get Please insert a PlayStation or PlayStation 2 format disc.

I said well maybe I #ucked up somewhere and did something wrong with PrassiDVD so I decided to give Nero a try. Also followed the guide which was much simpler and it created the backup successfully. Put the back up in the PS2 and same #hit.

I thought maybe there is a patch for Pac-Man World 2 so I went over to Gameworld to look for a patch. NONE!!! Then I remembered that I had read in a post that when a DVD was backed up to a DVD, patches weren't necessary. I wasn't sure so I looked and couldn't find the answer. Is that true?? When you make a DVD backup to a DVD you don't need patches????

Well, the above is my first question my second if there is not patch for Pac-Man World 2 what can be the problem.

I have a Modded PS2 with Magic 3.5.
All PS1 backups workd fine as well as Originals
All original PS2 DVD game work fine but this backup I made doesn't. Anyone have any suggestions??

You may have a compatability issue betwwen your burner and media, or media and your PS2. It's hard to say for certain without more info. Did you update your ASPI layer (4.60 or higher) and the Primo engine? Is your drive a 4X capable drive? (4X drives have been sort of hit and miss with Primo, but more successful with the retail RecordNowMax) Is the media brand name compatible with your burner? Does your firmware support the speed at which you are burning that media? Did you perhaps burn the media too slowly? (I know that last one sounds odd, but we have found that it is more reliable sometimes to burn true 2X media at 2X instead of 1X). What version PS2 is it? Need more info. please.

Burner supports: 2x speed Actual speed burned was 1x

Media: Verbatim DVD-R 4.7 GB SP120 Min

PS2 Ver: 7


So is Pac-Man World 2 burnable without a need for patch?? Or do DVD to DVD backups don't need patches??

Ithink the best software for ps2 dvdr is the recordnow max 4.50
Is fro the same company of prassi primo dvd but is better.
Use the same engine

I have to agree Recordnow Max is awesome. I even used it to GI and burn a stubborn CD-r game this weekend. It wouldn't work period with CloneCD or Alchohol 120% so I used the same process that burns DVD's to do this CD-r and it worked great.
One other note.... I ALWAYS read and write at MIN speed with RecordnowMax and always 1x or 2x with CD-r apps.

RecordNow is merely an updated version of PrimoDVD with additional drivers to support a wider range of burners. They both still use the same underlying Px Engine. The fact that your drive was recognized and your burn successful alludes to the fact that PrimoDVD isn't the issue.

I know this will sound silly, but try another burn at 2x on those Verbatims and see what happens. I've proved to myself with a v1-0D Magic2, v4-1A original Messiah, and a v7 Messiah2 Pro that 2x burns on 2x certified media always boot and load better than discs burned at 1x (which displayed the exact problems you and others have described.) I even recently suggested this to RAISTLIN who also discovered this to solve a similar problem he was having.

Pooh pooh the idea if you wish, but for whatever reason, it does cure the symptoms.

And yes, PacMan2 (and any other DVD original) requires no patching when backed up 1:1 to DVD-R.

Note: One last thing I've been meaning to share and now seems like a good time...

After I had LOD (Bill) mod this new v7 with the Messiah 2 Pro, we could only get one particular brand of DVD-R to boot consistantly. Apple, TDK, Pioneer, Maxell, all would typically produce the RSoD, booting perhaps 1 time out of 20. We scratched our heads for a while and I finally ended up taking the unit home to fool around with.

I ran my trusty Blaze cleaning disc through the unit 3 times for good measure, but still no go. I then discovered that I could boot any brand of DVD-R if I booted a GS2 backup first (using Without Codes.) Hmmm... no RSoD. That got me thinking about the laser trying to lock onto and focus on the lead-in track. Was it easier for the laser to switch and focus from CD-R to DVD-R rather than to just start off with a DVD-R? For some reason, my little doggie noggin suddenly recalled someone here mention turning on the Diagnostics Mode in the System Configuration screen to let the unit diagnose (and perhaps autoconfig) itself.

I booted the unit, enabled the Diag mode, and then inserted one of the "problem" Apple discs (which works perfectly in my other 2 units.) There was some initial hesitancy but lo and behold, the disc booted. I ejected, Reset the unit and again set the Diag mode (as it's a once-per-Reset function.) I tossed in a Pioneer backup. Presto, it loaded. Did the same thing with a Meritline 2x white-top and it loaded smoothly too.

Ever since, anything I've tossed in it boots perfectly the first time (without using Diag mode.) Now, does the Diag mode instruct the laser to auto-adjust itself and use whatever it finds as a future starting point reference? Damn if I know, but that little routine seemed to do the trick for me and it wasn't necessary to open the drive and adjust any little white cog wheel.

Go figure...
