Just out of curiosity. In casses where DVD-9 Games exceed the DVD-5 limit, is it due to false LBA and dummy files, or are they really full of data that being oversized makes it legit (meaning there's no funny buisiness going on with the Disc itself)?

I've seen some tutorials on how to shrink games but i'm wondering if this applies to every game individually, or if they're games out there that you need to rip something or downsample videos in order to fit them to a DVD-5 disc.

So far i dont own any DVD-9 game in order to try for myself, so i just need to know what's happening for informational purposes.

    Yes and No.....
Some games do have dummy files that you can remove ( rebuild game ) and change the LBA. As for example some rock band games are DVD-9 and you can down sample the audio to make them smaller DVD-5.
Also some games have alot of cut scenes that take up a good part of the size, you could remove them to make them smaller as well... DJ

Mostly I'm concerned about Gran Turismo 4 and Wild Arms:Aler Code F since i intend to buy them, i need to know if i can make lossless backup of them as well. Any idea what's the word on them? Oh yeah on a PAL system BTW, cause i guess filesize matters in accordance to what region the game is.

Beside rebuilding, you can still make a DVD9 1:1 copy with a blank DVD±R DL media (can be used with ESR and Toxic Patcher on softmodded PS2s).
    Slim PS2 SCPH-70004 (v13) w/ FMCB, 3x Sony 8MB, 1x MaxMemory 16MB (Backup card)

I'm not available for FMCB installation service until I can guarantee a processing time of a few days again, sorry.

Well yes but DVD DL media are expensive and i prefer not to use them for PS2 Backups, so that's why i'm researching the rebuilding option.

I'm on the same boat with GT4... I purchased the used game for 4 bucks at EB but it does not even boot so I figured I would give it a shot at backing it up but it is over 5gb... just wondering if anyone knows which files I could remove... It shows to be 2.4 GB in magic iso but after building it it is over 5gb... It also seems smaller when inserted in the dvd drive reads a size of 2.4 gb but when backed up it goes over 5gb...

Anybody know which files could be left out? I see an iso file inside the image with magic iso...

These are the files that show up in the root:
    Dir: EPSON (6 other sub dirs inside + 3 files) = 202MB
    Folder: IRX (27 files inside) = 748KB
    Folder: NET(2 files inside) = 35KB
    File: CORE.GT4 = 1.9MB
    File: GT4.VOL = 2.3GB
    File: IOPRP300.IMG = 272KB
    File: SCUS_973.28 = 266KB
    File: SYSTEM.CNF = 57Bytes

Magic Iso shows all these files to be 2551MB But once image is mounted it goes up to 4.94GB

Arghhhhh... Got nothing to loose and plenty of media... Gonnna remove the epson folder see what happens... LOL...

Maybe find yourself a tutorial on how to do that.

I hear there's a utility for ripping the videos and downsampling them to 50-55% before rebuilding the image.

Although tyhat's not an approach i'm wiling to follow. When i get this game i will burn the backup in a DVD-9 disc if there's no way around ripping orn compromising quality to fit to DVD-5.

    @JCDes
There's one more file on layer1. ;] This game could fit on DVD5 but You must downsample all *.pss. If You delete any of these file game will froze.

Allright... Thanks!!! Will give that a shot...

Ok I found SONIX's tutorial and kit for GT4... Worked perfectly... now I got a working backup of GT4 ESR patched in a DVD5...

Wonder why original does not work... I got the link for the SONIX's tutorial and kit dunno if it is against the rules to post it since I have no idea if the apps included are warez or not. Files are:

    Granturismo4 DVD5 ripper
    Apache3
    PSS Downsampling

    BTW cd/dvd generator is needed.
