Dual Layer Question

Even with todays newer DL burners and better quality media like verbatim 8x DVD+R DL do I still need to use toxic DL patcher to make a backup of my DVD9 games like Gran turismo 4 or can I go without? And if I still need the patch can I put the patched copy on my hdd and still play it with HDloader .8c?
