So can u back-up dvd-9 now that they have dual layer burners?
A bit soon to tell for certain. There could be some issues with software currently in use handling the change over during burning. Will need to wait until someone has had a chance to actually try it. Not a whole lot of DVD-9 PS2 games out there. As for movies, the same issues could come up as well. You might want to keep an eye on what is going on at the DVDDecrypter site and others like it. I am sure it will get tested and tweaked by them more intensely then with the retail packages--especially with all the copyright legal wrangling going on these days.

I was just checking the old changelogs of DVD Decrypter and noticed:
DVD Decrypter 3.2.0.0 (29/02/2004)
Added: 'Untested' support for Double Layer +R media burning
Haven't seen any other mention of it in newer versions though...
The problem is not the sw and the drive/media availability these days, as you can grab a writer easily and a DVD+R DL disk for some 10 bucks (which is though too costly for me, hehe) but the way dual layer media works in todays "reliable" PS2s. Well, just look at the forums and tests that did some testing on dual layer media reflectivity, PI/PO and jitter errors. There is the wellknown problem of the PS2 as its laser is far from perfect reading written media, sometimes even originals. So what do you think a drive that can sometimes read so badly a perfectly written QUALITY single layer DVD-R (for example Verbatim) disk and that still burns its coils, LA, and causes you a costly repair will read your written dual layer disks, that have much less reflectivity and have a terrible PI/PO error rate, not to mention the DVD+ standard incompatibility. Even you set the disk to appear as a DVD-ROM and not DVD+R DL will give a PS2 laser such a stress I think not that many PS2 will survive in the LONG run. And now let's not talk about the old consoles, like the V3 for example with such a weak laser, that almost cannot read a stamped disk. Many people cry as they watch dvd movies on Ps2 and freezes and picture distortions appear using original disks after one hour, of course the reading of the second layer is NOT that easy as most of the users really think. Unfortunatelly with such lasers as the Ps2 has, (or better said, as that turns after a short 1 year period, hehe) we can not expect that much of this "new" technology, that is probably a reason why there are just a FEW DVD9 based games anyway. And I remember back about ten years ago when DVD development had been in process (at least it had been started), they promised us as many layers as we just want, saying that reading the layers are VERY easy and let's see that now how DVD's future looks like. Two layers and that is the end.

Yeah....I forgot about the IlVu problems with the PS2. My Rocky Horror DVD gave my v5 a fit. That was over a year ago. Thanks for the refresher Stephen.
The Pioneer design is SUPPOSED to be keeping more inline with the DVD-R specs. I've seen it speculated to run in the 45-65% range--sort of between the -RW and -R book standards. Whether this will be true or not, remains to be seen. Still, it could cause problems on the older systems as you said. I guess the best rule of thumb until it gets some real testing done would be that if your system can't run RW reliably, don't even bother with a DL disk.
Personally, I could care less about DL for the PS2. As you said, not too many DVD9 games out there. The only one I've run up against personally was Xenosaga, and I got that for $25 with a trade in (Wolverine's Revenge I think). So I have to buy and actually play an orginal now and then.....big deal! I've gotten my fair share of money back by reselling my "mint" originals to compensate for the loss. My favorite is when I nab a new one dirt cheap, sale it at a $10-$15 markup and actually come out ahead! hehehe
