Mate, as said it is not said by some guys, it is said by special drives and people who have learnt this /worked with optical data strorage for several years. If you do not belive, go to www.cdfreaks.com, they had a nice review about disk quality examined using PROFESSIONAL tools which verify the parameters of the disk and wonder why Fuji is better than Ritek and why Ritek is better than Princo.
Is the trade off in price really something that's worth paying for assuming that you've never had any problems with the media that you're using now??? And therefore, are there any real consequences???
Like I said...I've used Ritek, StarLogic, Teon, Maxell and Memorex and have never had any problems with any of it...
If it makes you feel like you're some sort of status symbol by using Verbatim to burn your copy of Devil May Cry 3, then by all means go ahead...whatever floats your boat...I'm gonna keep using my cheap stuff...
And if your data is gone next year, you'll be crying here for a torrent site where to download the old game from. Never mind I know how cheap people act when they lose their data. Of course they want stuff for cheap and want to have the same QUALITY. Of course I am a status symbol guy, paying 0.1 bucks more for a Verbatim than for a Princo... If that is status symbol, then let me be one of those people.
I've been burning games on "cheap media" for about 3 years now and never had a problem with any of it...
I also don't use torrent sites...shitty downloads are probably most people's main problem to begin with...
Why how many burns did you do ? Have you tested all your disks regualary ? Or you just say you did not have a single problem. To be honest I myself also never had a single problem, except when I wanted to do yet another backup.... Just for a small test, do a Transfer rate test in NeroCDDVDSpeed especially on the oldest disks, and look how the graph looks like. And it will be just worse. Belive me, nor premium neither cheap ones won't last for 100 years. Many won't last for 1 year. Of course I myself have cheaper media (for movies, that I watch once and probably never again), and if it works then it's fine, but I do not wonder when people who use Princo have a dead PS2 sooner than others who use some better media.
pS: about shitty d/l's: most time those d/l's are just a backup of the original, so you burn just the same as when you do a backup of your original disk. As the content of the disks *0 or 1, pit or land* has nothing to do with the disk quality + readbility. There are several physical, geometrial factors that affect the disk quality, but the content does not matter.
To be quite honest there is absolutely no reason whatsoever to use cheap quality media anymore. The cost differential between the likes of Princo DVD-R and Taiyo Yuden DVD-R is virtually non-existant. The cheapest 4x media that I have found runs about $22 shipped for 100 discs. From the same site you can get 4x value line Taiyo Yuden for $32 shipped and right now you can enter in the following code: xpbargains10 and knock of 10% so you pay $28.80 shipped. If you are that cheap that you can't afford the $5-$6 per 100 pack difference between a top notch manufacturer like Taiyo Yuden and stuff that is bottom of the barrel, then I suggest it is high time that you find yourself a new job. BTW the site is www.shop4tech.com and they are about as cheap as it gets for all types of media.

I don't use Princo's, as you may have noticed if you'd actually read my post...my primary media is Ritek which I've had 0 problems with thus far...
If it makes you feel good about yourself to be a fanboy of 1 kind of media then by all means, have a blast...personally I think if it gets the job done, it's good enough...I honestly don't expect to be playing my burn of Madden 05 20 years from now anyway, so if my copy "only" ends up lasting for 5 years or so, I'm fine with that...
Do I constantly test my odl games??? Uhhh...no...I'm happy to report to have enough of a life to not list that as a hobby...I'm actually lagging behind getting to my new copies...I'll wander out to the living room here shortly and fire up an oldie, just for shits and giggles though...
I'm also happy to report that I could easily afford the 10 bones price difference that is being yammered on about...but like I said, I've never had any problems with my Riteks, so why should I just piss away my money???
I've also never had any laser problems other than the usual build up that was easily taken care of with some alcohol...
This whole thread is useless if you are talking about RITEK, while the question was about LOW quality media. Nobody here, neither me said that Ritek is bad. Neither that it is LOW quality. Let me repeat myself that it is an AVARAGE quality with decent price. Nothing less/nothing more. Anyway, lucky you, that only I can see those "gimme a link to x, y old game" lines here and there, as he had the game earlier, but the disk cannot be read anymore. Not to mention those guys on iRC and on several forums where they claim they have no problem with Princo (and others), though they usually backup movies as compressed to 3.5-4 GB max, as the outer part of the disk cannot be used correctly... (let me ask, why can't that be used ???) They are too stupid to buy another media, which could be used without such restrictions, of course for some higher price. Those gamers/leechers/hardcore movie collector freaks always buy cheap disks and wonder why they do not work + ask stupid questions here and there. Just do a quick search here aswell, and let me not mention other - mainly warez sites - where questions like this are cammon and answers like mine are always questioned and criticised by people who know nothing about neither optical disks, nor about computer hardware. I do not wonder why I have known more people who retired from the console/PC scene and why many guys do not visit these pages anymore.
No idea what you're rambling about now...
Anyhoo...Ritek may be "average" (or avarage apparently)...but it works...I tested my old burns of SOCOM I (on Maxell) and NCAA Football 2003 (Ritek) and both worked without any problem...
My 50 pack of Teon's I bought from Staples over Thanksgiving for a total of $5 also work fine...
I've never tried Princo's...maybe they suck...or maybe this whole thing is beside the point...
The point that he is trying to get across is that we weren't talking about Ritek here. We were talking about cheaper quality manufacturers. Also, I don't know where you are shopping for your Ritek, but that $28.80 per 100 discs shipped is cheaper than any of the Ritek that I have seen. As for the fanboy comments, they are unfounded. It is true that I might have a fanboy-like devotion to Taiyo Yuden, but the difference is that I have done approximately two and a half years of media research to reach this conclusion. This isn't just me saying, "Well, I have burned 200 TY discs and they all work great, so they must be the best media out there." This is my own personal experiences coupled with countless people's personal experiences across 8 different forums. CDfreaks has plenty of evidence to support my comments (as well as uns97 and several others on this site), not just "this media works great for me, so it must be the best." So forgive me if I have a hard time buying into your argument of "Well, every cheap disc works for me, so all of you guys are full of crap." I have used Princo, Prodisc and CMC Magnetics produced discs and truth be told most of the copies work on one drive or another. However, I have noticed the following: 1. They take longer to boot/load 2. They damage VERY easily, the slightest scratch can screw them up. 3. Some of them have quit working after 18 months. 4. As mentioned above, the universal compatibility across all applications (not just what works on one PS2), none of the media I listed above comes close to TY for the flexibility and compatibility that it offers. However, there are some people out there who get working burns with little or no trouble on the likes of Princo or Longten (Two of the worst quality manufacturers out there), does that mean that because they work for somebody they are good media and that there is absolutely no difference between them and the likes of Taiyo Yuden? NOOO!!!!! A number of these people do complain about having their backups quit working. On X-S (xbox sister site to this place) I had several poor guys lose 100+ working backups after less than a year, because they used Princo media. Also, I don't know where you are shopping for Ritek but I would like to know where you can get G04 or G05 Ritek for less than $20 per 100 (including tax or shipping). You implied in your previous post that you could get them for about $10 less than what I was mentioning.
