Online versions are supposed to come available in the next couple weeks and they hope to have a boxed release ready in the next two months. This may be another great no-brainer duper for DVD-5 PS2 and Movie discs. Still haven't been able to get an answer on whether it will be able to convert DVD-9 movies to DVD-5. All they can say is if you like CloneCD, you'll love this one--they've kept a tight lip on this release--can't get my hands on a beta no matter how much I bug them!. I hope to get some sort of working copy to try it and report on it soon though.

Is that the Canadian proggie from clonedvd.net? That's been out for over 4 months now and only does DVD-5 direct copy--I can do that with Primo.

This is from the guys at elby.ch in Switzerland. They are working on a program that will function similar to InstantCopy that can recompress a DVD-9 to DVD-5, but do the re-encode in record time (IC can still take a couple hours, even on a high-end system). They initially were not including PS2 and Xbox support specifically yet, as they knew little about the formats--but it may still be able to copy them when using the settings for a data disc, (just like with the original releases of CloneCD would copy the PSX discs by setting it up for copying subs, etc.):
Some quotes from the elby CEO about CloneDVD project back in December, 2002:

"The first release will be tuned for movies. What makes it different from similar programs is its ability to real-time recompress on standard CPUs (1 GHz), so you don't need to split, and you don't need to wait hours... The picture quality is still very good.

As of today, it can't copy X-BOX and PS2 discs. I know too little about these formats yet.

...it'll be both. You can copy DVDs 1:1 (which are not CSS protected), e.g. PC Software which comes on DVD. But the real cool part is the Movie stuff. Similar to DaVideo on DVD, yes, but much faster when it comes to re-encoding, if the movie doesn't fit on the media. *VERY MUCH FASTER*.

It will *not* copy movies on CD (DivX /VCD/ SVCD). It will only copy movies on DVD. "

I've found some purchasing links to this proggie on some Japanese sites, but can't read them (don't have Kanji installed either--got enough sh*t on my PC already!). It is the right program though--only elby uses those cute little sheep on everything (bleh!).

Will keep my eyes peeled for this one....

**PS: Even though the Canadian program is looking to adding a re-encoding option in the future for DVD-9's, the Elby release will have this up front, and will also run on Windows 98 systems--the clonedvd.net release only works on NT/XP/2000 systems (NTFS required)

    Yes but DVDXCopy is crap.

I use DVDToolbox, DVD2One, InstantCopy, or just plain ol' IFOEdit for my DVD9 > DVD5 rips.

Yes, but only the movie itself--no menus or extras. CloneDVD will work like InstantCopy--it will compress the extra, the menus, etc. so you get the entire DVD-9 on a DVD5. The big plus is it is supposed to do it faster than any of the other similar products out there.

DVD X Copy usually requires 2 discs, but you keep dvd quality. There is no compression. DVD X Copy Xpress uses compression and only keeps the movie itself, keeping better picture quality as less compression is necessary due to the removal of menus and extras. I backed up Braveheart, which is a massive dvd, with Xpress. I was pretty impressed. The quality was that of about a good vhs. I personally stick to regular DVD X Copy so I can keep true dvd quality and the extras if I wan't them.

Will it still keeps extras and the movie itself without lessening the quality? Is that even possible?

Not possible, unless the dvd is a dvd5.
