Nero CDSpeed v1.02

(Got a few other intersting tools as well--Infotool for example, but Nero CDSpeed is the one to grab)

This is a great little tool I stumbled on when reading up on DVD-R standards at a Japan pioneer site. Select your drive and pick "Disc Info" from the "Extras" drop down list and it will report any info pre-recorded on the media.

I was a bit surprised what I've found out about my media:

PACIFIC DIGITAL CD-R's are CMC MAGNETICS (Long-Write Scheme--AZO/Cyaninie)-- (100% with PC BACKUPS)

MAXELL CD-R's are RITEK's (700 MB's) (Short-write scheme--Phthalocyaninie) OR HITACHI-MAXELL (650 MB's) (Long-write scheme--Cyanine/AZO) -- (100% Success with PSX/PS2 Backups (up to 4XBurn)

TEON CD-R's (Wal-Mart Special) are CMC Magnetic's (Short Write Scheme--Phthalocyanine) -- (Great for PC Backups)

TDK's are (of course) TDK's (White top,Purple Bottom) -- 2X CERTIFIED WITH A04 Drive(100% Success with PS2 Backups)

The "Certified 2X, Grad-A" PRINCO DVD-R's (Silver top, Purple Bottom) I've had so much success with are in fact LEAD TECH DVD-R's (1X Certified with A04) --(100% Success DVD and PS2 Backups with Primo at 1X)


So I guess I stand corrected--The Princo's may in fact not work. I had ordered them twice from the same guy, but both batches have come up as a Lead Tech product. Maybe his supplier substituted when he ran out of Princo's--who knows. One thing for certain though, I will be checking my next batch and sending them back if they are not what I pay for. I guess the phrase "Buyer Beware" is appropriate.

EVERYONE should grab this utility or one like it, just to be sure you are in fact getting what you paid for. This thing will tell you at what speed your drive can reliable burn to the media in question. An invaluable tool in my opinion.
