Try loading the CD-Rs the same way you do the DVD-Rs as they're both PS2 games and the media shouldn't matter.
From standby, tap (don't hold) Reset to fire up the machine. Press Eject and load the CD-R. Press Eject again to close the tray. The game should then boot in the same manner as a DVD-R.
If the screen still stays black, you got some readlly lousy CD-R media or a bad image there. Try testing those titles in another modded PS2 or reburn the game(s) at 4x on decent name-brand blanks, like Verbatim, TDK, etc.
games were burnt at 8x on tdk i know ppl whove said that theve burnt games at 40x and worked fine. As for ps2 if i opne the tray from sleep mode is the browser/config window supposed to appear it stays black if theres no cd in unless i turn on in ps1 mode
o yea if i turn on in ps1 mode the red screen shows up if i put a cdr in it >:-\ what can it be
i have a similar problem...
i have to swap my dvd rip game a hundred of times to be read from ps2. why this shit happens???????????
Does anyone knows why?
shit happens
oops i forgot to tell you that i have my ps2 moded with neo2 and i use action replay 2 v. 1.6

shit happens
how/what program are u using to burn u'r cdr's???
I have this same problem. I'm almost positive now I messed SOMETHING up during my v7 install.
I completely took out the chip and no CD based media seems to load. It just causes the laser to speed up and down like its trying really hard to find information it needs, but, doesn't ever get anywhere.
1 original CD based game of mine will occassionally get to the ps2 logo.
well i fixed mine my prob was that apparently a wire was making contact with the metal try if u think this is your prob open it up and put black tape on the contact point but not on the board but on the lower side of metal tray not sure if this will work for u but it did for me l8er
This relates to some of my other posts about wanting to put cd-r games onto dvd-r. Anyways, DVD games will boot on my system but cd-r games will not. They try to, but, my drive just keeps spinning and spinning on cd media games (original or backup) to get info and doesn't succeed. Anyone have any ideas? Could it be a wire touching metal?
