Can a modded US PS2 play PAL games?

I just ordered my modded ps2 today and I realized I don't know if a US ps2 can play pal games. I know back when I made ps1 backups I used to have to get a pal to ntsc patch to make them work, will i need to do that again?

if you dont patch it.. i use my tv tuner card on pc to play pal games. since it with pal/ntsc.
