The 105 is just the bare A05 Drive (nothing else) that is installed as OEM--the A05 is retail boxed and packaged with everything including burning software.

It all depends on what you intend to do most with it. If you already have a CDRW drive and software you are happy with then you won't really need the EZ-CD Creater app. that is packed in with the A05 (Personally, I think CloneCD is a much more useful proggie since you can copy protected CD's easier--especially PS CD's). The Sonic MyDVD4 isn't the greatest for creating DVD's, but it is handy if you want to import your own videos from a camcorder and burn them to DVD-R. You can't directly create a DVD backup with this proggie--you have to rip, strip, re-encode (ie, big pain in the arse to use). If you want to copy DVD's to DVD-R, you no longer get the easier RecordNow products with the latest Pioneer drives (or any DVD copying software for that matter), but you can get the DX version with the A04 drives--but that drive doesn't burn at 4x, only 1X/2X. You could go with the 105 and use the money you save to purchase RecordNowMax or Alcohol 120--RNM is the more popular application right now. The free version of Prassi Primo is still available at some hacker sites. I think cdrsoft.cc still has it available. This is what eventially developed into the RecordNow line and the Px-Engine updates for RecordNow will enable Primo to work with the newer drives. The latest engine is still available at the old Sonic site here:

    http://support.sonic.com/downloads/engine.asp

You can go here to get the specifics on what comes with each drive:

    http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/Pi...020600,00.html

Personally, if money is a big issue and you simply want a reliable drive (in other words, you don't HAVE to have 4X burning capability). I would look into an A04 drive. It comes with the best software package: PowerDVD for playing DVD's on your PC, Sonic MyDVD for porting your home movies to DVD, RecordNow DX for copying/creating DVD's and CD's, and packet writing software for storing data like you would on a floppy or extra hard drive. All you would need to do is download free software updates. (You can still nab the free Prassi Primo for either drive you choose if needed) If speed is the most important thing, nab one of the 05 series drives. If you need/want the software packed in, get the retail A05. It's all dependent on what you want to do with it, and how much you want to spend.

Here's a site offereing the A05 for $210 US with free 10 pc 4X DVD-R sample pack. I've used them for media in the past and they offered a free UPS Ground shipping option that took 7 days from order date to go cross-country from CA to SC.

    http://store.yahoo.com/cdrdvdrmedia/pidv4xdvdbud.html

They've almost always got a reliable brand of 2X media you can nab for around $1/disk in lots of 50.
