I have heard many schools of thought:

    Verbatim, Memorex, Ritek, Fuji...

Which one will wear the least on my laser? I am just getting into DVD-R's and I am sure most of you have experimented on all kinds of media.

Also, has I have read in the past. Slower seems better as far as write speed goes. Anyone have any thoughts?

    Can I get some opinions?

I would go with Ritek. Slower isn't better. In fact, you can actually get a better burn at 2x than 1x. There is no problem with burning at 4x either.

So what's the theory behind slower is better? Data integrity?

I guess I have the mindset that the slower it burns the more efficient it burns, thus minimizing the loss of data. Am I way off?

I'd recommend verbatims, all the ones i've gotten have been less than 2 bux a disk, and they're actually made by taiyo yuden which most would say are the best dvd media you can get.

Ritek G04 is and has been proven to be the best dye on the market. It out performs in dvd players, all consoles. Personally I have never never had one single problem. I would not buy anything else!

I have used Verbatim as well with success, but when you look at the price difference it is kind of a no brainer. Less than $1 a disc for Ritek and they are top quality along with Verbatim. Only $84 from www.meritline.com for a 100 pack of Ritek. You have to fork out at least double that for Verbatim.

As far as burn speed goes there is nothing wrong with burning at any speed. It is known that some people get a better burn at at 2x rather than 1x. But hey, everyone and their ps2s are different. Do some testing and find which works best for you.

Speed does play a part in it. I burnt a PS2 CD game on a Verbatim Az0 disc at 52Xspeed. You know what happened? It played it not a problem. No crunching noices or skipping. Work that one out? The burner is a Lite-On 52x48x52. So all these theories can be blown out of the water I reckon. Just because something is burnt much slower, it does not mean the disc or dvd will be written any different. With CDR and DVD-R drives progressing so much, I believe they are made to prefer at there peek speed. What kills the laser you ask?

Hmmmmm? Every back-up you make whether it is on CD or DVD-R will in time say goodnight to Mr. Laser. Pressed CD and DVD games have a much higher reflective index, which means the laser doesnt stress alot to read the original game therefore less power to the laser which = much more lifetime.

Using and CDR or DVD-R media there reflective index is quite low so the laser needs extra jolts of voltage to recieve a correct reflection. Something sony didnt implement because these consoles where not meant to be for dvd-r or cdr games.

In closing, who really cares I know, but I just thought I would explain the workings of the PS2 for those that may not know.

    Conclusion:

Excellent Media can be burnt at HIGH SPEEDS (Verbatim CDR & RitkekG04 DVD-R)
This will not affect any game play.

Any CDR or DVD-R media, whether it be bad good, burnt fast or slow will have a damaging effect on you laser. We all know how crap the Laser's are and be glad that they last as long as they do!

    Or just buy original games

Hope this helps a little, just my knowledge of this little blackbox we all love.

Thanks for the info, guys. Sounds like Ritek is the most cost effective/efficient way to go.

I am having laser issues anyway, so I am just going to get myself a new one. At least that will give me (hopefully) a few more years. I don't play it half as much as some do.
