You can use the AR on DVD-R's with a no-solder, you just have to perform a double swap, since the AR is a CD. There are several threads on the subject, but I'll give a basic run down for you.

You need an original with a larger TOC than the game you want to load. The Devil May Cry DVD's are excellent because they are nearly a full DVD-5. You can look at the disk sizes on your PC by selecting the properties of the disk in Explorer.

Boot with the AR. After the codes list is loaded and you are looking at the main menu, load the original via a normal eject to get the TOC space reserved in memory. While it's doing this, start selecting your codes.

*Note that the AR will remember your last selections the next time you boot it. You will still need to drill down to your codes and deactivate and reactivate at least one code to prompt a code list refresh so you have time to swap in your backup. This is also how you have to load your DVD-R's without codes via the troublesome newer GS2/AR2's that fail to boot DVD backups normally--just activate/deactivate any dummy code to prompt the code update screen and follow the step below.*

Once you have your codes setup, press the start button on your controller. This will take you to the screen where you can "Start Game" "With Codes". When you get to the screen telling you to load your game and press X to continue---DO NOT LOAD THE DVD-R YET!. Press X while the original is still in there. You will get a "Updating Code List...Please Wait" screen. This will last for about 40 seconds. This is where you use the special eject function of the chip to swap in your DVD-R. (On mine you just hold down the eject button until the tray opens, swap the disc, and after 5 seconds it closes by itself).

There may be a loud click or a slight "slap" if you wait too long (the PS2 tries to start reading before the disc is fully seated). You just have to get your timing down to prevent undo stress on the mechanics. Basically, don't wait more than a few seconds after you get the code updating screen.

    Good Luck!

I did my own detailed Gameshark 2 DVD boot study. Saved it for you, for whatever it's worth, hope it helps.

    DISC SWAPPING PS2 BACKUPS, CD AND DVD GAMESHARK2's 1.9, 2.0, 2.2.
    By Me.

CD's and DVD's. If you can't find the symbol on the cover, PS2 CD's are BLUE and the DVD's are Gold or Silver. Your PS2's browser knows, too. DVD's appear Gold, CD's are Blue, PSX CD's are Black, and swap like PS2 CD's, only using the PSX Gameshark2 CD as the "Boot Disc".

    CD's............
All of the Gameshark2's, INCLUDING the PSX CD for PSX backups work the same way. Once the Main menu is up, the CD is no longer used, and is no longer spinning. I have tested others, like the Pellican CodeBreaker, and the MGS2 extra GS2...these don't use a memory chip, (the GS2 hardware or "Dongle") and they fly out spinning every time, not recomended at all. Anytime after, work your swap-trick, start without codes, or with codes for the backup you want to play, no matter, just swap in the cd-r, and hit "X".

Swap Tricks: Any Boot Disc Swap method, the solderless chips just electronicly blind the PS2, and slide the tray out for 5 seconds, without restetting the console (without the "eject" button registering as being pressed-hence the yellow led!), but the "Knife Swap" is basicly the same trip. Soldered in modchips work like the memory chip in the GS2 dongle, they spit the right code into the data stream, simulating a licance code read. No swapping to those. I'll just say "Swap Trick" or "Work your Swap", you know wich method you're using, if not, give up now, you're lost.

DVD swapping: This is a little harder with GS2. CD's are simple because the GS2 is also a CD. You have to boot a DVD, with a larger "toc" (table of contents) than the backup you intend to play, if you can, use "Devil May Cry", it's the biggest, and well, I would'nt back it up on those grounds, what'll you boot it with? Anyway, from the Gameshark2's "Start" screen, we'll use eject the normal way, and put in the "DVD Original" or "DMC"...then get it to STOP SPINNING long enough to work the swap and get the DVD-R backup in, this is where the method changes from GS2 version to version. Now you have a disc waiting to cue, this one does'nt have to stop spinning if it's waiting to play. Those using the "tool" avoid v2.2 (Yellow "V2"). Boot a copy of an erlier version GS2, or the "ps2 boot disc download", a cd-r copy of DVD Regeon X (works best if you have to triple swap around the "new version 2" Gameshark2) off the 2.2 if you can, and if the 2.2 is all you can get at your retailer (most likely as of now, anyway).

Version 1.8: Automaticly opens the tray at the prompt, USELESS.

Version 1.9: Best Gameshark for this, can be downloaded. Regular insert the "DMC", select without codes (or with codes for the backup to play) and get to the "Insert Game Disc and Hit "X"" screen..WAIT, work your swap first, then hit "X", the DVD-R boots right up.

Version 2.0, and the "Mirra Trick": To stop the "DMC" DVD from spinning with v2.0, you have to attempt to start "WITH CODES ON", but with to many codes to actually play. This brings up the "Too Many Codes On" box, and that's the only swap point that stops the "DMC" for you. We like to use 77 codes on "Dave Mirra's BMX", that's too many codes for that one, for sure.

Version 2.2, and the 10 second window: 2.2 will only stop the "DMC" from spinning if you CHANGE THE NUMBER (of) and/or CODES that are applied, and start WITH CODES ON, when you get the "Updating Code list" box, for the 10 seconds or so that it appears, you can swap in the DVD-R, but I only recomend that for no-sod chip users, It's longer than the tray comes out, anyway. Hit "X" to start, with "DMC" still in, swap while it updates the dongle, so "X" and "Hold Eject" at the same time, practice.
A toxic agent on a dangerous mission so secret, even I don't know what it is, because if I did, I would have to kill myself. I don't even know who's side I am on.
