just got my first 25 pack of these http://store.yahoo.com/supermediastore/dvd-r-ritek.html

ritek and record now max is still only letting me burn at 1x with the max setting. i have the latest firmware for the ao5. i thought these disks would be detected as 2x? is it safe to manually up the speed to 2x? one other thing burnproof was pretty reliable with cdrw's allowing you to still use the comp while burning what about the ao5. can i still surf the web and email while burning ?

Right now they are working on a hacked firmware which will allow Pioneer A05/105 to burn at 2x on Riteks. As for the manually setting it to 2x...I don't think you can do that ...not with Nero or RecordNow Max anyways.. Browing the web is fine when burning DVD-Rs.

I have the A05 also. It seems that Riteks are the only thing that will burn a quality burn at 2x...and isn't expensive. I've used some TDK's and they work like a champ, but the $3 a piece is a little more than I would like to pay. Is there any current media that will burn at 2x on the Pioneer/Cendyne a05 that is cost-efficient?

P.S. How well do those 4x listed in the posted above work? Anyone tested them?

I have made about 40 ritek at 2X on my A05, some say it may eventually cause problems but I have yet to have any, and I have a 1 year warranty anyways, but do at your own risk, so if you want to try it take a look at this thread..

Okay, how about a method or some media that doesn't destroy your drive. Like I read in some other forums, that paper clip method is only good for about 100 uses, then the drive is kaput.

Are there anything other than TDK's that I can burn at 2x? I mean without using some funky method that will eventually destroy your drive...

If you check your Sunday newspaper advertisements, Office Max was running a DVD-R special nearly every week. I picked up 5-packs of Maxell and Imation discs for $11.86 a piece + tax. They both burned fine at 2x in the Pioneer 105. If you search online, look for some RitekG04 discs because those burn perfectly at 4x and cost about $1.90 a piece in quantities of 25 or more.

I did a lil' looking around. I found the Ritek G04 here:

    http://www.hypermicro.com/store/index.htm

Scroll down (it's the 7th header) and you'll find them there. It's $48 for a spindle of 25. If these things can burn PS2 games at 4x and play them nicely, I'm sold. I'm seriously thinking of getting the spindle and doing some tests on difficult games like Vice City. I'm kind of worried about getting the whole spindle and finding out they really only work well at 1x. Hopefully there will be a local store that is kind enough to carry them in singles for me.

Napalm. Have you tested the G04's at 4x? Do they get skips or blips in the game when you try to run them? Lemme know pls. Thx.

Imations have had flaky results. They are being sold cheap for a reason--just like the Memorex discs....not going there again. Trust me--steer clear of Memorex.

As for reliable, cheap 2X discs, there is a site selling TDK Clones fairly cheap. PS2Newz members raped their wharehouse last month at $1.12/each in 25 packs (cheaper in larger quantities). They've got them back in stock again, but they've jacked the price up to $1.50 each at 25pk, $1.33 at 100pk. Here's the link to the site, they are labeled as "True 2X" and scan with a TDK ID and test positive for 2X in my A04 drive with stock firmware.

    http://www.allmediaoutlet.com/dvdr.html

They also list Riteks that will burn 2X with updated firmwares. I haven't tried them yet, but someone out there may have some info on these (start at $1.40/each pack 25).

The Lead Data 1X disks (silver tops) performed wonderfully in both PS2 and Movie production, but they are only 1X disks. I am thinking about trying the higher quality Lead Data's (white tops) with my next batch--unless my current test batch proves reliable. These Lead Data's start at $1.28/ea pk 10. These guys tend to sell some re-branded from time to time (my first test batch of Princo's were actually the Lead Data's), so the white-top L.D.'s may be the same as the True 2X?

I am waiting on a potentially better deal from a Yahoo! store called CDRDVDRMEDIA (http://store.yahoo.com/cdrdvdrmedia/). They have a combo deal starting at 25pk with DVD Cases for $1.21 each, as low as $.99 in 500 bulk (without cases: $1.15/25 to $.70/500). They claim to have tested 2X in Sony 500A (with firmware update) and the Pioneer drives. They have taken 6 days to get to my local UPS terminal with the free shipping option and should arrive today (1 week from West Coast to East Coast--free shipping??!!). I will be posting the results after I get a chance to snap off a few. The post will reference the brandname "AccuDisk", and I should have something up by this weekend.

    Good Luck!

    Raist
