Why put linux on your ps3? i mean, most of the people that can put it on there, already own a computer, so why not just stick with the computer, and stick to playing games on your ps3? wouldnt your computer be faster anyways? this almost just seems like a 'look what i can do' thing, but doesnt seem very practical... please, inform me otherwise ^^ id love to know why i should do this to my ps3

With all the trolls hanging out on this forum lately I am going to suggest you ask any LINUX forum as to why people would want to use linux.

At the risk of feeding the trolls I'm going to tell you why I personally want linux on the ps3; it is so I can eventually use XBMC because the built in media center is horrible.

Not to sound rude or be a jerk but I get the feeling you are just a troll trying to have fun getting people to argue.

If we ever get legit RSX drivers we could get quite a few awesome emulators working.

Moreover, we could run whatever code we wanted to (remember not every developer uses the same languages, what if I want to run some Java/Perl/Haskell/et al code on my PS3?)

I guess the long and the short of it is, if you have to ask why you would want to run Linux on a device then running Linux on that device probably isn't for you. I'm not trying to be rude--just honest.

The question wasn't why people want to use linux, the question was why people want to use linux on their ps3 when they have a pc. But thanks for taking the time to answer, both you and Wutangrza.

In my case it saves me money since I don't need to buy a laptop or computer for one of my family members. They are just going to mainly use the internet to download attachments, watch web video's ...ect. So no need for even a low range pc/laptop. There are many sites that the ps3's browser can't access that you can now access via ice weasel and most importantly, I regain control over my PC by kicking them off of it!

cause its easier to turn my PS3 on to display stuff on a tv screen than setup all the wires to attach my weak dying laptop to my giant tv? I was gonna get around to trying how well totem runs on it (linux media player) because its in the repositories on the PS3 linux, but I never got around to plugging any internet in to download it (and I also know no sound driver has been built yet) and don't know the name of any generic debian codec pack (normally just use ubuntu restricted extras) although I guess I could find some in aptitude.

More so, at some point I have to go over to my friends house and help him setup linux on his PS3 (because he destroys all actual computers he touches.. I have no clue what he does to them) so he needs anything to use as a computer, so that will be great for him. some people don't actually have usable computers

There are many reasons why someone would want to put Linux on a PS3.

Sony advertised the console as a Computer, not just as a game console. So many people bought the console for more than just gaming, as it offered BR DVD player and the ability to run an OS (linux) on it.

Some people dont even have a computer, but got a PS3 as a gift or was all they could afford or aquire.

Some people like to have a secondary computer in addition to having a real one or they couldnt afford to upgrade an existing one and opted to get a PS3, since it was able to play games, DVDs and be a computer.

Many just want Linux as mentioned..."because i can", so you see there are a lot of reasons. As mentioned, if your not a Linux user yourself, then perhaps its not something that would really interest you in doing.

    SCPH-79001 [V16] Silver - unmodded
