Your comments reek of ignorance. I have a pretty decent PC, self-built. I don't live in a basement, nor am I a child.

Anyway, my PC, being pretty beefy, happens to be quite loud. There's quite a few things I like doing overnight, which can be done in linux. Speed isn't an issue for these tasks.

Now I must point out that one of the reasons I opted for a PS3 in the first place, over an XBOX 360 was that the PS3 could run linux. I am still on firmware 3.15 so I can run linux.

And the linux on my PS3 is pretty cool for the things I want it for. It's also a lot quieter than leaving my PC on all night. Sure I could build a quiet linux box, but why bother? My PS3 works fine for the job already.

And as for linux being the poor man's windows, then please can you tell me why the vast majority of the top 500 supercomputers in the world are running linux instead of windows? Not to mention that most of the internet is delivered via linux boxes.

Maybe you don't understand linux that much, eh? Maybe people like you should just stick to windows. It might be easier for you.

Quite well, thank you. only game I ever play uses DirectX9c, and havent seen a single rendering problem yet. more so, it loads faster in Linux than windows... on that topic of speed, for some reason, Microsoft Office 07 installs faster in linux than windows, so that should give you a pretty good understanding that even official microsoft programs run better in linux (last time I checked 2010 didnt correctly install, but oh well, I dont see any reason to update anyways).

There's a reason for people not wanting to use linux, it's because it's made for those hacker types with more lines of code written than actually having interacted with normal people. So you have two choices, using an actual OS without having to worry about reading a huge tutorial on how to actually install it (http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-x86.xml or reading manuals on how to port over code or run it in some shitty emulator like WINE.

And don't get me started on the name, it sucks because people don’t know what is the exact pronunciation of it? – Linix, Lynex, Linax, or what. I mean it does not have a name that can be uniform throughout the world. A name is a mark of functionality—people who claim that it works so well and does not have any working problems are under an illusion.

the only thing linux is good for is xbmc and thats it, i wouldn't use it for a main os though, i just hope they port xbmc to the ps3 soon! i would love to retire my old xbox 1 :)

1) Did you know that hotmail originaly ran on Linux? it was only after people discovered that Microsoft didn't even trust their own OS to run their mail that they finally switched to their own OS. How could their be a money problem when its ran by microsoft itself? they can make themselves as many keys as they want.

2) Get stuff done eh? why doesnt windows come with anything useful? why doesn't it solve your problems for you? fixing problems instead of doing things? linux tells me anything it wants. Most distro's of linux involve a couple of clicks for setup, and include better programs than most windows versions while still taking up less space. More so, transmission bittorrent actually bypasses some ISPs torrent throttling (Shaw's atleast since thats who I use) When I turn my computer on, I like it to load up in a couple of seconds and have far more programs avalible while using less resources, even though I have 8 GBs of ram and a quad core. its also great how the default features in my distro tell me all the facts on how worn down my hardware is at the current time.

3) you do realize that most distros will do all the work for you on install, right? if you cant read a field that asks for a user name and password, then there is no way your gonna be able to read the windows installer.

4) a name is really that important to you? shows how brainwashed you are that you have to have name brand things.

5) ya, ill enjoy letting my update manager do everything for me and every single program in my computer when ever any files are updated instead of having to buy a brand new operating system and then choose where I want to wait 10 hours for it to do an upgrade install or back everything up and do a fresh install.

The fact that linux is used on most of the worlds top supercomputers has nothing to do with cost. linux performs a lot better than windows on large systems. So in fact, you would actually be wasting a lot of money by not installing linux, due to the lower performance. Do you really think that an organisation who can afford to splash out on an IBM Roadrunner system couldn't afford some software?

On my PS3, the linux server is headless. In case you don't understand what this means, I am saying that I do not need a keyboard, mouse, or monitor/TV connected to the PS3 to be able to use it. I manage it remotely, from my PC. So do I care about a so-called "year of the linux desktop"? Not really. And on my PC, which has windows installed, I run linux side by side, in seamless mode. It's all pretty cool stuff really. I can use programs that aren't available in windows.

Also you talk about normal people. What is normal? I'm not really much of a hacker. Maybe you are confusing dumb people with normal. And I won't comment on your public admission of pirating windows on your system.

Finally here, you say "people" don't want to use linux. It's not people at all, it's a group of people (like you) that don't want to use it. Lots of people do want to use it.

Actually, when it comes to linux, there are a lot more choices than Gentoo. You probably shouldn't comment on something you don't understand. Ubuntu is pretty newb friendly. And there are hundreds of other distros too.

Firstly, you ought to know that OS X and linux both share common ancestry, so are actually cousins, and have more in common with each other than they do with windows. Secondly, are you saying that the only worthy purpose of a computer is to play games? WOW :facepalm: linux has many purposes, and is used by lots of people. I will list some for you.

* Desktop users who don't want windows, for whatever reason

* Most supercomputer users

* Most web servers

* People like me

* National militaries who don't want to be dependent on an operating system, whose code is hidden, and might be used against them (China and Russia)

* The French government

The French government? Really? This shouldn't be a reason to use an operating system, they probably use it because it's easier to pronounce in their retarded language and just like to be different in general. And the only reason Russia and China don't use windows is because they don't want to support America.

Also, OSX is nothing like Linux (it only runs on macs) oh and to the dude that said macs use "overpriced" hardware, here's a fun fact: without macs you wouldn't have a MAC address.
Besides, the hardware isn't really overpriced as it uses quality components unlike cheap and inferior Dell counterparts.

Also, you say there are desktop users who don't want to use Windows, these are people living in denial and believe that everything in this world must be free and think they're entitled to a free operating system. The desktop user shouldn't be needing anything else than Windows. Basically, Windows is a very basic OS that covers most peoples needs and power users usually opt for a Mac..
