okay i saw some youtube videos of people being able to run steam and TF2 perfectly on linux with the WINE emulatorso is it possible to put that in the ps3 linux? basically being able to use the WINE emulator, install steam and TF2 to the ps3? would be soo damn awesome if its possible since the new homebrew where you can use a keyboard and mouse to play on the ps3 is here now.

    ........
It's early so I'll let someone else answer with why it simply wouldn't work.

Google streammygame, that's the closest thing you'll find.
It lets you stream games from a pc to any other pc, so you can basically play pc games on a ps3 running ydl but with a ps3 controller.
It's not bad, but it can be kinda irritating to set up.
Edit: It seems streammygame support has kinda died for linux on the ps3, no new posts have been made in ages, but yeah you can try. Also, it seems you can also use Ubuntu.
STOP! Before you ask questions... READ the first post! RTFFP = Read The F*cking First Post
Yes, A 3.55 "jb" (cfw) is available, no >3.55 "jb" or cfw yet.
Yes, A 3.55 downgrade is available. But not to lower than stock firmware! (What it came with)
No >3.55 downgrade is out there yet.

so unbutu can get the wine to work with steam and work with tf2 fine on the ps3 right? like after installing the linux back on ps3 it has 100% compatility of everything linux related right?

    Probably not... and here's why:

    TF2 Min Spec:

    1.7 GHz Processor
    512MB RAM
    DirectX® 8.1 level Graphics Card

    PS3 Spec:

    PowerPC-base Core @3.2GHz
    RSX @550MHz
    256MB RAM @3.2GHz
    256MB GFX RAM @700MHz

Now, the problem is we don't do know if the RSX is DX8.1 capiable or not. I also can't find out if WINE can force the card to run in DX8.1... so that's an issue. The other issue, of course, is the fact that the PS3 has half of the RAM required to run TF2 as a minimum.

So yeah, I don't think it'll work. You've got GameOS loaded, then you'll have to load Linux... then you've gotta load steam and finally TF2, all into a paltry 256MB RAM.

The PS3 will not run any PC game made in the last 10-15+ years (rough estimate don't start quoting me saying I'm wrong. I really don't feel like looking up 15+ years of titles.) through emulation. The PS3 simply doesn't have the power, and we don't have full RSX support. But even if we did TF2 and games like it are still impossible on the PS3 using emulation and linux because the PS3 is simply not strong enough. It can't even run linux perfectly by itself, so how can it run a full DX9 based game through emulation?

The only methods you can use to get PC games running on PS3 linux is some type of software that basically throws the video signal to the PS3. Basically what cookie said where it just streams the output to the PS3 while the PC does all the actual computation, and graphics simulations. Which is pretty much a niche feature considering you could just hook a cable up between your PC and TV and just play through that on the couch.

No linux distro will let you run wine+steam+steam games. It's simply impossible on the PS3.

Your much better off just using your computer. Hell DOS games like Doom, Duke3D, Shadow warrior, and raptor can barely run on the PS3 using DosBox. They were all made back during the golden age of gaming and were built for DOS. So simply put, again no it's impossible.

I know the discussion is already mostly over but nobody's mentioned the major barrier so far:

The PS3 does not have an x86 processor. Wine cannot (ever!) run on non-x86 hardware.

It's a windows compatibility layer. To get x86 stuff running on non x86 hardware you need a full emulator and this is where xPreatorianx's answer comes in, the PS3 isn't powerful enough to emulate x86 at reasonably modern speeds. Some older stuff, like games from the 90s, should be possible to run under DosBox which is an emulator for older systems.

    WINE Is Not an Emulator.
The PS3 uses a PPC architecture, and X86 is required for Steam. You'd have a better chance running Counter-Strike on the original Xbox.
