After tryin out Linux I suspect the real reason it has been removed is because a lot of people would have trouble getting back to PS3 mode once they tried Linux. I bet they got a lot of support calls from people who could not figure it out. Since its not a very large selling point they probably figured they would save themselves the trouble
They really should have made it so you can only get into Linux if you hold something down on start-up or something to prevent this issue.
That could be true pepper..
However this is what was said by a rep on the PS2 linux forums:
"I’m sorry that you are frustrated by the lack of comment specifically regarding the withdrawal of support for Other OS on the new PS3 slim. The reasons are simple: The PS3 Slim is a major cost reduction involving many changes to hardware components in the PS3 design. In order to offer the OtherOS install, SCE would need to continue to maintain the OtherOS hypervisor drivers for any significant hardware changes – this costs SCE. One of our key objectives with the new model is to pass on cost savings to the consumer with a lower retail price. Unfortunately in this case the cost of OtherOS install did not fit with the wider objective to offer a lower cost PS3."
&
"Sony was quite diligent about testing, and with each new rev of the GameOS
(which acts as the hypervisor for Linux) there was a battery of tests. Often
the GameOS had to be modified to support things which otherwise broke in
Linux, so it is not a one-way street. GameOS affects Linux, and Linux affects
GameOS."
.................
So who really knows the real reason be hind it all..
Could be due to piracy as many users where using the 3rd party OS to run Emulation on the PS3..
Im sure in the near future Linux will run once again on the slim..
As for Rolling back the FW on an earlier rev. I know that will not work as the hardware is different in the slim then what it is in the fat PS3..
However anything is possible is one where to dycript the FW and take what they need and recompile a CFW to the PS3..
Only time will tell..

Ya Im Bi-Poler and proud of it
Ya Im Bi-Poler and proud of it
Good point..
But that goes nowhere near explaining why it was removed from phat systems altogether, it's one thing not having the H/W in the slim but it was already there for phats.
And for anyone who'd be anywhere near interested in putting Linux onto their PS3, I'm sure they'd have a fraction of sense and maybe read up on it.. I could be wrong, but I'm sure they've more problems with people calling about SD - HD issues, not seeing the screen etc (which would still be happening) than problems switching between OtherOS / GameOS.
I just can't see how they can even attempt to justify what they did, when Linux wasn't even theirs in the first place!
/Sony hating rant..
In other news, finally got a legit PS3 running! w00t! Had the update loop because of a missing BR drive + logic board (dug board outta a bin), ruined drive gears and a busted laser. Now I just need a longer ribbon cable to put the case back on.. Chuffed!![]()
