Hey guys. Finally decided to give red ribbon a go :) My PC crashed and i can't start it up. I know i ahve to reinstall ubuntu, biut i was mad and decided to put it off and use my ps3 as a PC for the past few days :) I'm not not a n00b using linux, but new to red ribbon and have a few problems that maybe someone can make sense of.
First of all, i noticed when i try to download any large files, most fail after a while. They just stop downloading and then i get an error something along the lines of "file failed and cannot be saved cause source file cannot be read" or other times it will say the download is done, but it only downloads like half of the whole file. VERY damn annoying. granted, i am using wireless, but my connection isn't going out! and this never happens on my PC and thats on wireless too.
Also whenevr i try to unrar anything (installed unrar-free) The window pops up then disepaers and nothing is unrared! It just vanishes before it's done unraring and no matter where i try extracting to i get nothing.
other times the problems is with surfing the web in general. It just seems like randomly sites will take FORVER to load! FDigured it might have something to do with memory issues, lost connetion or having too many tabs/windows open, but thats not the case as one time a site will load up fast, then other times i have to keep hitting refresh until it finally "catches" and loads up.
I never had any of these issues using any other linux on ps3 and it's really starting to annoy the hell out of me.
I installed REd Ribbon to internal HDD and did all the upgrades . Then i started installing and testing video players . KMPlayer behaved pretty well , played AVI files as well as DVD ISO , but still having hickups and problems scaling the image to fullscreen . Then i installed XMBC , fancy UI but really slow ,even in menus . When i installed it it also created a new login user . When i rebooted the console i can't login anymore , i'm stuck in the terminal . Does the pic attached suggest it might be because of XMBC ?
Can you give me some advice on the following ?
1 . How do i get out of this error ? If i enter my user and pass i am able to type terminal commands but what to type to return to the GUI ?
2. Which video player works best for playing DVD's and AVI files ?
3. Any news on that video driver i've been hearing lately ?
4. REd Ribbon v5 , is it out yet ?

So i haven't used redribbon on my ps3 in a while and decided to boot it up and get RC5 update. Tried doing the online update with the wget redribbon.sourceforge..... That worked, but then when i tried executing the sh file it said syntax error unexpected line. or something like that. Have no clue why. Tried checking my sources too and when i went to reload it wouldn't finish and went to an error. is something up with the online repository? i'm on RC4. Any ideas?
I'm having problems with the website for exceeding its bandwidth threshold. I decided to temporally disable the online repository, but you can reinstall it from LiveCD.
i'm looking for an alternative hosting for the online repository.
Sorry for the inconvenience.
No need to be sorry for anything r04drunner! you have already done enough with the great distro. I'm actually glad thats what the problem is , and not something i screwed up on my end somehow. Any ideas when you'll find an alternate hosting for it? I'm in no rush, but i would rather wait for that then go through the live CD/usb installation again. Unless it just saves right over the RC5 canditate and i wont have to reinstall everything again like add-ons , configurations.
Also any idea about my older post on here about 2-3 posts up? downloads would just stop out of the blue, especially if they were long downloads. Should it just really be used to surf the net and keep big downloads to my regular PC?
I figured I would try red ribbon since everyone else seems to like it, got everything installed just fine but the keyboard layout is messed up. I cant enter any special characters, letters work fine, numbers are moved one to the left?!?! and none of the special keys work.
I searched but couldn't find anything, any help is appreciated :)
