At the moment the ps3 isn't capable of running much faster than a pentium 3 according to this article
PS3 Running linux = about as powerful as an 800mhz Pentium III
Will we begin to see optimizations to PS3 linux and the software it runs that will allow it to make full use of the cell processor and consequently allow it perform more closely to modern desktop PCs?
That article is over 4 years old dude. It's talking about the original crippled OtherOS. All you had to work with was one CPU.Quote:

Performance is still the same as OtherOS, the thing is linux doesn't use the SPU's for normal running and unless specific applications are written for the SPUs performance is going to be average. Without the Spu's your left with a 3.2ghz PPC single core with hyperthreading.
And not to mention the limited ram, nothing can be done to fix that, swap is terribly slow and makes things worse.
What will help is a proper gpu driver, it will help gui out alot.

Thats not true. It is a dual core ppc at 3.2 ghz. The main issues are the lack of hardware video accelleration, which really hits it hard in terms of 1080p video playback, and the lack of ram (256mb). 256mb isnt too bad, as you dont need heaps of ram for many tasks, but we really need a good video driver. Which is hard work. But it'll come eventually. Then we will have a great lounge room media player :) Until then, its a nice toy but isnt that useful for for most people.
