PS3 and Linux –
04-17-2012,05:11 AM
Hoping someone can help with this as spent 3 days searching and can't find any definite answer for it. I suspect the answer is no but want to make sure.
Currently got a slim ps3 and an older phat ps3 both running ofw 4.11 and I know at the moment I cant use custom fw on either. The phat has previously had custom firmware on it but I wiped it and went back to the ofw so i could play online. This was before I had the slim ps3.
Lately I have been using xbmc more and more and been thinking about getting apple tv 2 to jailbreak and use just for xbmc. However my phat ps3 sits in the bedroom and hardly gets used now as have the slim ps3 in the living room on the bigger 42" screen. So it got me thinking of any possible way I can use the ps3 and wipe it completely and just use it to boot to linux and xbmc? So it would have no ps3 software on it and would just be used as a media centre running only linux and xbmc.
As I say I suspect the answer is no but can't seem to find anywhere if the same question is asked and the PS3 would make a nice media centre that could run my movies and tv series from my NAS drive using xbmc.

xbmc was the shit for xbox, showtime is the ps3's version. Keep in mind early xbmc was called xbox media player and sucked, showtime plays hd mkv on ps3 but it is not as clean looking as xbmc.

I like the look of xbmc with the coverart and the ratings for the films and tv shows. Really impressed with it.
Does anyone know if it canbe done?
