OtherOS++ install –
I want to install Linux on my PS3. I have got a PS3 Slim CECH-2004A 120GB and CFW 3.55-kmeaw installed. I want to use Rebug’s Boot OtherOS++ & OtherOS Prep Tool to install it. And I want to install it on an external HDD.
So I have some questions. Is everything ready to be installed? Have I forgotten about something? Will everything be successful?
Thanks in advance
the setup is pretty easy, i just tried the rebug otheros++ and had problems with games so I uninstalled it
here are the steps from rebug.me
16MB NOR PS3 (Model CECHH or Higher)
3.55 OtherOS++ enabled firmware installed
(If you want to use REBUG 3.55.1 grab PS3MFW Builder 0.2 Portable
from here with the tasks pre-selected to add OtherOS++ support)
IF INSTALLING LINUX TO USB HARD DRIVE:
STEP 1: COMPLETE VFLASH AND PETITBOOT INSTALLATION
(PS3 Hard Drive WILL NOT be Formatted)
Run OtherOS Prep Tool
Press START+SELECT.. You’re done!!
(PS3 will beep when it starts and again when it finishes)
(System will auto reboot)
Run Boot OtherOS++ to launch Petitboot
rebug.me is down for maintenance right now, idk any links for the ps3mfw tasks if you dont already have them
thanks a lot
But there is a problem.
I'm in petitboot now but I don't know how to run the debian installer. I've tried many tutorials but still I can't install debian.
if your good with linux then follow this guide:
PS3:Linux - Wikibrew
before starting the guide, from petitboot choose 'exit to shell', and make sure your connected to the internet from a wired connection, I dont think there is a way to turn on wireless before debian is installed but i may be wrong
If your not so good with linux then I would recommend waiting for more of a noob-friendly guide
Ok thanks. But is there a way to install it from a burned CD?
I think you can use http://cryptr.net/ps3/debian_ps3_netinst.iso... I don't think there's instructions n how to install but put it into your ps3 boot into petitboot the installer should pop up select it and then follow the instructions its pretty straight forward , setup pass, create your filesys, etc i just dont know about installing the latest kernel, there is some .deb packages that work cryptr.net but they aren't the latest ones
from gitbrew (should work with any linux distro):
Another Way to get Ubuntu on you PS3
...is to use an Installer-Disk.
1. Download these ISO
These is the alternate-installation for PS3. Its a rudimentary installer. He is faster than the graphical one of
the normal installtaion.
2. Burn to disk
it is needed, to burn these image. An installation from usb-pen is with these installation not possible.
Put the CD in the drive and reboot to pettitboot. Choose the first normal installation.
Follow the instructions. If you get ask for the partition, my proposal is to use the whole linux-partition.
The assistant should choose a port of it for swap. After the installation you cloud chance the swap to ps3vram
The installation-process take a quite a while. (3-4h)
4. Post installation
it could be that you have to chance the fstab. (which described which /dev ubuntu mount to what you want)
From Petitboot go to Terminal. cd /tmp/petitboot/mnt/ps3dd1/etc/ and nano fstab.
Ubuntu should run like a weasel (a handicapped)
So I've decided to install linux on internal hdd. I've installed otherOS and created /dev/ps3dd. But how do i use parted. I followed the instructions for partitioning the ps3 hdd on PS3:OtherOS++ - Wikibrew. I've changed the 2GB to 8GB and when I type print it says:
Disk /dev/ps3dd: 23.6GB
Number Start End Size File system Name Flags
1 17.4KB 8000MB 8000MB primary
And then when I type mkpart prmary 8GB (15.6GB) it says invalid number or "XX" has invalid syntax for locations when i type another size.
Help me please
are you putting the brackets when you do it...? You dont need them
another way to do it is
mkpart primary 1 8GB
mkpart primary 8GB -1
