Noobie. Linux/Ubuntu on PS3???
Noobie. Linux/Ubuntu on PS3??? –

Ok.I got a 80gb fat Cechk06 on kmeaw 3.55
Im pretty happy with what I can do with it but, like all humans...I want MORE!!lol...Been thinking about adding Linux/ Ubuntu to its attributes.
Im just wondering, coz Im not a dev or geek...can I just use these Os' for simple computing tasks like typing documents..surfing the web with compatible browsers, playing music..downloading torrents with compatible torrent clients?I mean, will my PS3 run the Os just like an ordinary computer would?
I know the ram is abit small, but Im not asking for too much...am I?

OtherOS++ will let you do all of those things
i would start with debian tho, because the guide for ubuntu doesn't seem to work for a lot of people. the debian guide, on the other hand, works for most. debian is really similar to ubuntu, ubuntu is actually based on debian.

Wow.Thanks for the reply.Just to be clear...Debian will run on the PS3 like ubuntu runs on a laptop??And I can perform all regular computing tasks??
Okey...I have read a couple of installation guides and earlier today discovered that gitbrew.com was offline.
Most of the guides state that I need an ethernet internet connection as a pre-requisite!! What ever for??? What happens if I do not have an internet connection?? :-/

you need an ethernet connection to install because wireless does not work while installing, after you install linux though, you can install the wireless drivers.
during installation, and following the guide on gitbrew, the commands you enter use the internet you get all of debian's files and the ps3 kernel from gitbrew's git repository, so that is why you will need an internet connection. it may be possible to do with a cd or dvd but i have no experience in that respect so i am uncertain.

WoW! Interesting...that just makes it a tad bit more complecated for me! *sigh*....A dvd would be nice. This whole internet thing may also mean installation speed will depend upon the speed of my connection(which I cant say much of)!lol
Does that mean I will also constantly need an internet connection to use the Os???

No, you only need an internet connection to install it, after that you will be able to do whatever you want.
