Minecraft - AsBestOS

Hey guys, I was wondering that now with AsbestOS, and Debian running... I was wondering how Java runs on there? I was hoping to be able to play Minecraft on my TV! My biggest worry is the lack of memory though, considering I get it to easily chug 2+ Gigs of ram on my PC..

It'd probably work with graphics set at lowest.

I can't wait to get home and try it out.. Might use my spare console while I'm not there to run my server, since it's mainly client side that requires the horsepower..

I think as long I don't use the edits I made for view distance and keep to a not so crazy texture pack I'll be running OK.

Do we have any more minecraft players around these boards?

LOL, what do you mean minecraft "players"? Minecraft isn't really a game, so it doesn't really have players.

haha But still, whether you consider it a game or not, it's a fun... Software to use.

In a few hours I'll be done work and be able to try it out on the console!

I can't imagine anything java-based would run well with the limited amount of RAM present in the PS3.

Well, I tried it out.. It runs, that's about it..lol

I have a massive world so it's much to load, and my ram usage goes to the max, although it might benefit having swap files, it's not a solid solution for playing minecraft on my big screen though..lol

On the other hand, I may host my server on the PS3, as that takes up a tiny fraction of power from the current server / PC I have at the moment.. But would also take a huge performance hit if I start using server mods.. hMod brings my ram usage from 120MB for the server to just a tit over 550MB (Never over though)..

Will report once I get off my lazy ass once more to try it out.. In the meantime, somebody should try this out also and try their performance with it..

can you perhaps remote into a PC capable of running it and just use the PS3 as your terminal?

The performance would probably be better LOL

I was actually thinking that, but it would defeat the purpose of power conservation though.. Having the server running uses ~1000Watts, compared to ~180W for the PS3.. haha

I'll see what happens with the development in the coming weeks/month, both AsBestOS and Minecraft, hopefully some improvements will come..

But I think with swap files, and better optimization it can run decent, because I can get it working OK on my work PC, and that's only a single core 3ghz with 1.5gigs ram with CAD running..lol

Thats a ton more memory than the PS3 has. Java is pretty memory intensive (in general) so I don't know how you could make it work better. A large swap file could help I guess. I'd suggest you connect a separate high speed thumbdrive to your PS3 and use that for your swap space so you're not reading from the HDD and using it as swap at the same time (think readyboost)
