    hi everyone

i followed this guide " Install OtherOS on HDD (for all PS3 models) " to install ubuntu 10.10 on my ps3.
then i did a restart and when i reboot into petitboot i have the option to either select something with debian_vflash:blablabla or exit to shell.
now when i exit to shell then i have nothing - it is like i never installed ubuntu. when i select debian_vflash the system says it is shutting down.
what do i do now? apparently, it must have worked for someone, otherwise he would not have written that guide.

ps: whole gitbrew page is down :P

On the page that you followed it has the debian kboot.conf i think you would need the ubuntu 1

    PS3:Linux - Wikibrew

has it scroll down to the ubuntu debootstrap section

Im not sure if its you problem though

to answer the OP's post, the shutting down message is a message to let you know that petitboot is shutting down and that it is trying to load the kernel you installed, for whatever reason it could not load the kernel so it hangs. so it's not really linux shutting down, it is petitboot shutting down.

the kboot name really doesn't matter, it is still supposed to load the kernel you set it too (in this case it should still work).

in any case, i also tried to install ubuntu the debootstrap way and was unsuccessful with both lenny and natty. i just think ubuntu and that guide do not work together at this current time.

HOWEVER, the debian guide with nearly all the same exactly instructions works perfectly fine and i decided to use that instead since it is very similar to ubuntu anyways.

i also tried the version with the distro on cd - same error. ok then, could you link me to the debian guide?
and do i have to pay attention to some details if i switch the guide now? like what do i do with the partitioning and stuff. can i reuse everything or do i have to format?

Last time I checked, gitbrew verified that Ubuntu does not work at all with the HDD method. They said they endorsed and supported debian anyways. now that might have changed, but that's the last I heard. So that's probably your problem.

someone should edit the PS3:Linux wiki page to reflect this then.

I can only say I tried it several times the ubuntu way with all available methods. Always got the same result: Petitboot shutting down and the system is stuck.
So I strongly support afiser and say that must be reflected in the wiki. More people will try this and be frustrated!
