So now that the PSjailbreaks (and similar) are getting more popular, has anyone any idea on how to get linux on the PS3's again? Im hoping for a bootloader package. Lets get the linux dev going again!

    **** Edit Oct 19 2010 **** :
Looks like the best chance of getting linux back is with Marcan's "AsbestOS".

Here is a link to his blog announcing it. There are pre-compiled binary to try it.

There is now a README file in the repo for more information

You can also follow user marcan42 on twitter.

here is a link to the git repository for those that know what to do with it git.marcansoft.com

i would love to (sucks to get a fat ps3 with 3.41 fw already installed :/) , but first comes the analysis of how exactly is other os disabled. is it entirely removed, or maybe it just doesn't show up in xmb?

and there are no real tools for that, not even a homebrew file manager for a ps3. yet.

i think this will take a while, but i'm having my hopes up.

Would be great to get a linux distro onto the PS3 again, as I could then get XBMC onit and not have to bother with my PC... Just can't afford a Revo or a linux box just for my media at the moment so a 5m HDMI cable is what is being used at moment from PC to TV lol.

    Roll on Linux and XBMC!!

My thoughts exactly. the original xbox was great but it has hard limits. PC never was as smooth as the xbox is for usability. Is there a xbmc build for powerpc linux yet? or how about a ps3/hackintosh running the mac version of xbmc?

anyway another thought is how to disassemble the firmware updates to get diffs. I guess that is what geohot was working on to make his custom firmware. if we can run unsigned code then it is conceivable that tools to give us more information on the internals of the ps3 can be created. now where was the link to that gcc build again?

i think we need some patience atm. ps3 hackers need to first get their dongles and explore whatever possibilites the exploit allows.

geohot's exploit is superior to this method in the fact that it can totally circumvent the hypervisor, while psgroove/psjailbreak enters lv2 priviledges (same permissions as games). so by using geohot's exploit much more can be done with hypervisor and spe chip.

so i'm not sure how deep can the hacking get with dongle method. firmware mods might be impossible this way.

psgroove can give us full rsx access, and more relaxed permissions compared to otheros. but it won't get us to lv1 or (possibly) deeper.

i assume geohot's method makes it possible to decrypt firmware packages, while psgroove does not (insufficient priviledges).

getting other os back to restore possibility to use geohot's exploit, or writing a homebrew that can be launched from xmb like backup manager and reproduces geohot's exploit, without need for otheros, is probably the way to get into lv1 with dongle exploit. and from there we will be in full control of the ps3 system and might start actual firmware modification attempts.

i believe otheros is still there for ps3s that had it (not sure about slims) but it is just hidden from the menu.
PIC based jailbreakers please visit my thread below and please READ. I have spent a few hours now trying to explain everythign as best I can here. You will also find my latest HEX releases there as well.

Hrmmm... I am still waiting on my chips to arrive, but I was just thinking - if the PS3 is put in to a Dev mode, would it be feasible to assume that it can install one of the special PUP's used to downgrade PS3 Test units to lower versions (which include OtherOS still).

I have yet to investigate the Dev mode the PS3 is going in to, but it might be something feasible to check out...

a PUP that could launch the ps3 into "other OS" mode would be more practical.

I understand even with grove, its still a relatively small number of people who have a dongle at this point but I am surprised there has been nothing mentioned about any attempt to get Linux back up and runnin

I still have Linux on my PS3. I guess one can create a Launcher on GameOS to change, maybe a bootflag to boot to a linux partition. The PS JIG toggles something in lvl2 in enable debug mode, maybe it could toggle linux.

    i have a question
what is so important about Linux?
i mean we have jailbreak method now if we ever wanted to exploit PS3 and run homebrews
the only thing i could see Linux usful is running PC games that have 256 for a min. of memory. other then that what is the point to it?
