Is it possible to install Linux without having a network connected PS3? As mine is upstairs and where i am at the moment has no wireless router. So i was wondering if i could just get a Linux Image file and install it like that...
If it's possible, could anyone give me a step by step or an idea of how to go about it?

There are already step by step guides. And as my understanding goes, you just need an ethernet cable plugged into the PS3 and into a router, but no i-net is required. Search for the tutorial as I'm sure no one wants to write it over again.
As i said theres noway to have my PS3 connected to a network at the moment. :/
You don't have to have it connected to a network, just need to have the PS3 think that the network connection is active. Whether that be using a crossover cable and a laptop, or a router/switch not plugged into anything but the PS3.
I guess what the thread starter is trying to ask is that is it possible to get the Ubuntu Linux configured without internet. As in, you need internet to download and install LXDE desktop envirnoment. So, probably that is what he is referring to, ie a way to install the desktop envirnoment without internet. Which is what I am trying to figure out as well.
No both of you are completely missing what he is asking. He doesnt want to use the pre-made images he wants to use bootos 2.01.
Idk if either of you are messing with linux or keeping up with the developements of it but with bootos 2.01 you actually install linux nativly to the ps3 just like with otheros. The only difference is that it uses an external drive instead of using the internal. You HAVE to be connected to the internet so it can download and instal linux to the drive, its not a pre-made image.
I have been wondering the same question because i still have some of the other distros on my pc and would love to burn them to a dvdr and install them. Maybe soon they will come out with a new bootos that will allow you to install from a dvdr instead of having to use the internet or maybe someone in here knows how to do it with the current bootos.

To tell you the truth idk why this linux section of the forum isnt blowing up because everyone screamed that this is all they really wanted, linux back on the ps3. But as you see all anyone cares about is ps3 backups. The only thing i want is homebrew, emulators, and linux.
Its a shame to see these threads be ignored by all the ppl who screamed that this is all they wanted except for the few of us that keep these sections alive. If i knew how to code then i can promise i would be working on this shit all the time but i dont.:p
Yeah i have SNES, Amiga, GBA and the Fail PS1 emulator on my PS3. Great to play GBA games on a big screen and to have a good quality mouse replacement for the Amiga. :) (Clocked up over 20 hours of gameplay on Pokemon Ruby so far. ;))
