I'we mainly been doing some XB360 hacks and with all this news about the PS3 hacked I hade to buy one. =)

I have some questions. Im on 3.55 right now, what steps would be needed to get linux running on this machine?

As i figured it, I would need to install the CFW with the app install XML-patch, right?
Next step. I need some sort of kernel-loader in a self-package?
Does one exist or do I need to compile one myself?

    Are these assumptions right?

And also. Would it be possible to patch a 3.55 image to allow downgrading to a "linuxable" FW-version?

I have no intentions what so ever to run pirated games. I just wan't to be able to play my black ops with my friends and use it with linux the other times.

AsBestOS is a linux boot loader made by Marcan (part of fail0verflow)

    git.marcansoft.com Git - asbestos.git/summary

Dont know how good it is, I know its early days yet, but there goal was (is) to build a PUP that can flash and then boot natively on the PS3.

Its worth searching about for AsbestOS, some payloads were created for it a while back.
Make sure you butter the non reflective side of your CD's / DVD's and Blu-Rays so that when you drop them, they land butter side down thus preventing scratches.

Im guessing you have a slim, so no firmware will have the native "OtherOS" feature on the Phat models. Not that you could downgrade from 3.55 yet anyway.
Your best bet is to play Black Ops online with your friends now, AsbestOS will be around soon enough.
Dont install any CFW's for a good 4days to a week after they are released, let other people be the guinea pigs.. this is new territory and too many people who dont have a clue have been handed they keys to an open console and the tools to seriously **** them up
Dont go online with a hacked console for 6 months to a year, again let other people be the guinea pigs.. no one knows how Sony are going to react to all this.
Other than that enjoy the fun times

Geohot had a 3.21 with OtherOS as i remember. Don't know for sure if it was on a Phat or a Slim. I think it was a Phat because he needed a Phat to crack the PS3.

Now will it be possible to create a 3.41/3.50/3.55 pup with the OtherOS from 3.15 in it?
I know OtherOS still keeps it's slow and bad performance on higher FW's but just to show the world the scene can repair the removal fail from Sony (and notalgic reasons of-course ). It would be nice if I can update my Phat 3.15 to a higher OS without losing OtherOS.

and AsbestOS is the best way to go but with all the recent developments I don't know when we will see something useful. I think AsbestOS is based on payloads to load at the start and if we don't need to use the dongle in the future some trivial parts of AsbestOS have to be changed. Running Linux on top of the GameOS so it can make full use of the potential of the PS3 is almost the best I can think about for my PS3 (AmigaOS I would kill for (in a game that is ).
Orwell 2011: Big Sony Brother is watching you ... Every PS3 contains Sony Spyware !!
Fat 3.15 (CECHJ04) with OOS, Slim 3.55 (CECH2004A) with Kmeaw CFW patch
How nice is it to have a black box near your TV that can do everything you want?

I've been lurking here for the past 2 months or so trying to keep up with all the news. What I have gathered so far regarding linux is that fail0verflow's goal is to have linux booting on all models of the ps3.

I'll just wait for some launcher and a usable CFW to arrive.

I don't want to replace the whole system with linux. I want to be able to play my legit games online. Like BlackOps and then launch linux when im done.
