Hi guys im new to this scene as in i just got my first ps3. this is really no lie i got this thing for 50 bucks because the laser was gone.
So my question is how do i go about installing linux from a usb stick? i have allready installed the otheros kboot and downloaded ubuntu but i have no clue where to go now. i am in the process of looking for a new laser but untill then i would still like to play around with this thing as it just sits there in my living room. i have looked all over the internet and may have just missed it but idk. if there is anyway to do this then would someone mind pointing me in the right direction. i dont need it spoon fed, hell just a link to a tut would be nice. thanks guys.

I did try it today with Ubuntu 9.10. The installer was fine with installing it to a USB stick. It went through and installed it. But after the install was complete it booted back into the Ubuntu 9.04 on my PS3 HDD. I dunno. It did install to USB but can't boot from it. I'll keep trying keep ya posted.

There can be serval causes why the Linux on your internal HDD got booted.
It depends of your Bootloader (otherOS) wich System ist booted.
I advice you tom Use the PDAXrom bootloader: KLICK ME FOR DOWNLOAD
It can boot your linux from nearly every device that is supported by PS3. Also there is the pdaXrom Linux avaidibil that can run als Live System from USB (runs very, very fast - but its Live).
But if you try to boot Ubuntu 09.04 or newer there will be trouble because these Versions use the new ext4 and that is mostly not supported by avaidibil bootloader yet. Only the KBoot what is delivered with the newer Ubuntu Version supports Ext4 but AFAIK this one will boot from internal HDD.
