It seems that kmeaw has the lv1 and lv2 patches. I'm willing to give it a shot anyway, because it is definitely not working with what I've got now. I'll let you know how it goes when I get the time to try it out.
Used MFW to make my own 3.55, still not working. This method must not work with the 256M NAND FATs.

So to the people who got this working is it worth it? Notice any speed increases? Or is the old way just as good?i mean don't you still have to hit panic1 as opposed to level 2 patcher to get into linux anyway? also not to mention this will lead back to the hot swapping usb's to get linux to boot which isn't much fun.
I'm still on the fence, and after trying mikeM files not sure i want to give this another go just yet.
I guess i can clear my other external thats strictly for linux (500gb) and format it to fat32 to backup my ps3. I don't feel like using my other one again that has all my game backups, and other things on it as that took 2 hours to transfer to PC, as i noticed the HD must be clear or else the error of "cannot access usb device" will pop up when you get to around 70%.
I need some convincing as to why i would want to use up my ps3 internal HD (40gb for flash resize) for linux, when i have an external at 500GB strictly to use for linux formatted to ext3.
I now have a new problem, at the last step (create vflash 7) I format my HDD then the system restarts and then tells me to rebuild the database that then fails then tells me to format in a endless loop. Please help.
Good guide george! got it working I decided to do it. Only thing that you aren't clear on is this
6,Only put on the usb petitboot imagedtb.ps3.bin and install/run petitboot to vflash 5 (both onto root of usb)
So do we install the petitboot pkg first? or don't even install it? or after installing run petitboot to vflash5. I notice when you do it brings up the "im back" and has the penguin. i notice using the petitboot loader it takes a while to start up.
Also can we use the same CD for PPC ubuntu you had for us a while back to install?
Seems when trying to use the CD i've used with the powerPC ubuntu ist just hangs at booting install, evne if i hot swap the usb devices. Are we supposed to be using something else?
I also get petiboot to start up (using the petiboot.pkg since panic 1 gives me a red blinking power light) but it just hangs when I try to boot a live CD image (tried Gentoo and Debian) from either USB or the blu-ray drive itself. I am very good with linux...but I get no error message so I am stuck...
edit: to be more clear, I can see the bootable entries from the usb but it just says "booting debian... " when I hit enter

Ok so after doing all the resizing and still not being able to boot any installation i decided to just restore my HD back up. Tried a few times and kept getting errors. That failed so i did a FULL reformat and that took 7 hours. tried restoring again and nothing.
Luckily i had all my gamebackups on another external, but i did have to re-download all my emulators, backup managers, didn't lose any saves cause backing those up worked.
This is DEFINETELY not worth doing IMO. It is seriously still a work in progress and graf wasn't anywhere near complete to getting it run how it should. I lost my psn games ( only had 2 so thats not a problem) Now i have to reinstall linux but will be going back to boot os 201 and using level 2 patcher and the "guide to install any linux distro" Sucks cause i had my linux just how i liked it with grafs kernel, no worries though as it's a good learning experience doing it over and over again and luckily i save all the old files that get posted so it should be a breeze this 3rd time around.
