    Hello all,

Is there a user friendly tutorial on how to install Linux.

I been reading on the forums all you can do with Linux, media center, mame, Netflix, etc, etc

I am very excited, also a dual boot sounds great.

Also I don't understand what asbestos, distro, etc etc is.
I assuming the are versions of Linux.

So is there A tutorial to installed, files I need and how to use it

This will help more than one noob out there

    Thank you

Please use the search function, I'm begging you! (weeps in a corner)

AsbestOS is another way to install linux on your PS3, same thing with bootos. Distro is short for distribution which is relating to linux. Distributions are different version of linux that exist. For example Ubuntu, gentoo, slackware, etc etc. These are all linux distributions.

Now again here's all the threads that you could have easily found using the search function (I've literally typed this post up about 5 times this week, and it's getting extremely frustrating now.) :

Here's the first site you need to look at. glevand It includes all the downloads to install everything you need.

Here are the tutorials from that site : lrn2linux

here are video tutorials from that site if text isn't enough : YouTube - Kanaal van Gitbrew

Check here : http://psx-scene.com/forums/f119/how...titboot-85533/ (How to resize vflash and install petitboot)

That is an entire thread dedicated to using the dual boot method to install linux. That also serves as a troubelshooting topic if you have any problems. So please use that. Make sure you read this topic all the way through before you make a post. As most of the problems are detailed. The last 10 pages will go over some problems as well which can be fixed with instructions I have provided or others have provided. So again read it from page 1 all the way through please.

here : Here is the thread for another problem that happens sometimes if you mess up. I've also documented several things in this thread as well.

    http://psx-scene.com/forums/f177/how...ash-7-a-86324/ (How do I restore Vflash 7)

Here's also a topic for game compatibility after you get otherOS++ installed and linux. Some games don't work with this CFW right now because it's only been out for about a week or two. :http://psx-scene.com/forums/f187/oth...36/#post813956 (OtherOS++ game compatibility list)

Now please use the search function from now on instead of making a topic because you don't feel like searching the forums. Just because you are a new user doesn't excuse you from not searching the forums.

here is the search page so you don't even have to click on the tab at the top. BOOK MARK THIS! : http://psx-scene.com/forums/search.php

Sorry to be a bit harsh but I'm seriously getting tired of having to answer these exact same topics because people don't know how to use a simple search function.

EDIT: For other things such as emulators, and media center apps you need to use the search function for those. look for showtime, mame, or anything else. Also if you don't even have a CFW installed or aren't using a dongle on 3.41 you need to use the search function on how to get started with that. As you talked about linux I'm not going to clutter this post with a how to on how to do everything as it has already been done Ad nauseam all over the forum.

Cry all you want, this forum is not n00b friendly.
    The topics are cluttered.
The topic titles are lousy and not n00b friendly.
The forum cries at n00bs asking the questions that are allready ansvered,
but with the way pw0ners start threads and write articles, you are asking for it.
The "tutorials" are not n00b friendly, because a n00b has probably tried to search
AND read the entire ****ing forum, and still understands nothing.
The search is not n00b friendly, because n00bs don't know the differende between piece of shit wrapped in code and just a piece of shit.
"Read it all" the pw0ners said. And so the n00b cried. No pw0ners ever have.

Make this forum and the topics more n00b friendly, or stop complaining.
You want these repeating Q&As to be the result of stupid n00bs, but it is in fact,
your own fault because of the complexity in the written articles, and no obvious place for n00bs to find the right videos or other helpful ways of going about.
"It's all on the front page!" the haters reply. The n00b still don't understand anything.

I love the scene! I love the work ypu guys have done.
But when a problem is repeating it self, try considering changing ypur self, not everyone else.
It's a reason you have to post this over, and over, and over and over again.

That's not my problem. The tutorials are about as noob friendly as you can get with linux. Linux isn't noob friendly to begin with so what do you expect?

The fact is people don't search one bit. If they did search they would report their problems in the threads that have the guides instead of making a completely new thread. That's common sense which is why I know most of these noobs haven't even searched the forum.

But I'll meet you half way, I'll put up a thread that has all the guides in one location. That way I don't have to keep copy and pasting this stuff over and over again.

I can only make it so noob friendly. Linux and the methods currently out have helped improve the accessibility of the tools but it's still far from perfect. I can only make guides on the methods. The actual methods themselves need to be improved. (which are being improved slowly but surely.) But again linux is not noob friendly in and of itself. So you can only do so much. Especially with the version of linux that are compatible with the PS3. The only ones are Ubuntu PPC, debian PPC, ARCH, and gentoo. Gentoo is the hardest by far to install for anyone, including experts.

Well, you are the one complaining.
Never said it was your responcibility though...

I disagree when it comes to Linux not beeing n00b friendly. I was a total Linux n00b about 6 months ago. After approx. one moth, I had learned what i needed to be more than just a desktop user.
Actually, i totally disagree with you. Linux IS n00b friendly because of the wast communities of the various distors. No, Gentoo is not for n00bs, but how many are trying to install it on their PS3s anyway?
I would guess that approx. 0.01% of the posters here know how to compile in Linux. The rest are n00bs. The scene is for the scene, yes. But then why open the scene to the public if not to please the public? Without an audience, the scene would have no meaning.

I agree that people could do more searches. Lord knows, one of my favourite sites are Let me google that for you
But one can choose. Get annoyed by all the people in the world who dont act the way one expects, or, try to make it so that people will choose to go about the way you recomend.
For instance (just an exaple), make a focus on the search function in the guides, or make a sticky. You probably notice that no matter how many replies you have given, people still dont search first. So what do you think is the most effective way to go about?

I do really appreciate your effort in collecting the guides in one convenient location, thats great, and also why I love the scene. People tend to forget you guys are doing this in your spare time.
And my tip is, ad a couple of lines regarding the forum search function and how to use it, save yourself a lot of frustration.

    Regards from Tha n00b
