guys i know this thread kinda lost its way abit on about petitboot and so forth but there is a new thread which is just for this...i would appreciate you use the other thread and when i have abit of time i'll move all the stuff related across. as for your problem i think the vflash is different on a dual nand chip and im looking into it...problem is i dont have a dual nand to test...i have a slim and also a phat nor ps3 but im in need of a dual nand to add to my collection
I wasn't aware this method doesn't work with 256mb models, thanks!
I know it's not quite the same, but if you want me to test anything for you on a CECHG or CECHC 256mb versions, just let me know, it's no problem.
Can i reach you guys in an IRC Channel or something ? I really need help installing Graf's Kernel

I've hit a snag with this tute.. When I try to partition my external in Ubuntu installer, it errors out at 33% saying something about "cannot mount sdd" or something along those lines.
I've tried formatting it (FAT16, FAT32, NTFS), and tried different HDD's and different USB flash stick's, yet nothing changes, 33% every time before it stops.
Recently I've been trying again (on more USB sticks) and the only thing that's changed is now it says "The attempt to mount a file system with type ext2/3/4 in SCSI3 (0,0,0), partition #1 (sdd) at / failed." Then asks to return to partitioner. It also gives the same error regarding swap space: "The attempt to mount a file system with type swap in SCSI3 (0,0,0), partition #1 (sdd) at none failed."
Anybody got any ideas for what I should try? I've been at this for days (since my original post) and I'm pulling my hair out, trying to find the cause of this issue! What really bugs me is, I had it working before, using the same PS3, same Ubuntu image (from first post of this thread) yet nothing is working this time around (I only had one HDD at the time and needed to use it for something else).
I've downloaded the natty 11.04 version for PS3 too, but I get the exact same error/message when I try to partition.
Thanks for any tips you can throw my way! I'd really appreciate it..
I was asking family members about it and they haven't seen anything similar, the more qualified brother was even stumped, only thing he mentioned was how swap space shouldn't be mounted (as I thought) but had no idea what might be causing it (since he only works with PC's, he was unsure about the PS3 and suggested reading forums etc.. I've Googled this but can't find anything relevant).
I'm not fussy about what method I use to get Linux booting (except I don't have vflash), but I wanna be able to use Graf's tools from Ubuntu, so I don't think the basic method of putting linux.img on your internal hdd with LV2 patcher pointing to it will work..

I succesfully installed YDL 6.2 using bootos-v3-petitboot on a 80GB fat ( well it took 24 hours to install to an 8 gb usb stick ! ) Overall , it moves slower that i knew it on 3.15 .
Can i install graf's kernel on it ? Can i make an image of my 8gb stick and place it on internal hdd for more speed ? What more can i do to improve performance ?
External is always slower because of the swap and the filesystem used. With graf his kernel you can also mount the ps3vram as superfast swap.
Also add the "hugepages=1" command with petitboot to have the extra 108 mb ram (this works also for your 8Gb stick if you install graf his kernel to it).
I assume you haven't created the partition(s) on the internal harddisk yet? Maybe read some info about that first.

I don't want to go the vflash way yet because first i want to recover the lost 10GB when upgraded from 3.15 to 3.55 , i don't have a 16MB type and i don't want to change my Kmeaw CFW
YDL 6.2 auto mounts ps3 vram at start .
My system monitor shows
USER MEMORY : 97.8 MB
USED SWAP : 745.9 ( that 256 vram + the rest from stick )
The only active processes are Gnome System Monitor and Enlightment , the rest are sleeping .
But still it's very slow opening anything.
My first attempt of Linux was with AbsestOS and some ubuntu img files placed on dev_hdd0 . After installing LXDE and settings ps3 ram as swap it was pretty decent but i could not install graf's kernel so i was limited .
I'm wondering of i could do the same with this , create an image of my whole installation and boot it from dev_hdd0
